We had a foster kid living with us for a year. Her previous foster parents were Black. When she told them she had been raped at a party by the adult who was supposedly supervising said event, they told her to forget about it because, quote, “Black men get prosecuted too much.”
She moved in with us after these foster parents took her to church in another town, then after the service, told her, “Don’t get in the car. You don’t live with us anymore.” She was left standing there, on the steps of a CHURCH, with nothing but the clothes on her back. On a Sunday, in a town where there isn’t any bus service on Sunday. They didn’t even bother to ask if she had a freaking quarter to call someone for help.
She moved into our home a few days later and attempted suicide shortly after. During the 3 days in the psych ward, these former foster parents tried to bull their way in to see “their daughter”, but Dearest wouldn’t let them near her. I was so proud of him. He stood right up to them and said, “You abandoned her on the church steps. She isn’t YOUR anything any more.”
One of her (many) issues was the rape. We helped her prosecute it and maybe besides helping her heal a little, also prevented some other minor from being assaulted by this same predator.
