Turns out Tom Cruise is not THAT big of a jerk

So … it turns out Tom Cruise did NOT say making a movie was like fighting in Afghanistan. He said being separated from his daughter while on a distant movie shoot was like being deployed. Jake Tapper revealed that somebody torpedoed Tom Cruise by quoting him totally out of context.

Cruise Suri Holmes

Here’s how the deposition actually reads:

  • “Now your counsel has publicly equated your absence from Suri for these extended periods of time as being analogous to someone fighting in Afghanistan,” opposing counsel asks him. “Are you aware of that?”
  • “I didn’t hear the Afghanistan,” Cruise replies. “That’s what it feels like and certainly on this last movie it was brutal. It was brutal.”
  • “Do you believe that the situations are the same?” Cruise is asked.
  • Oh come on,” Cruise says, “you know, we’re making a movie.”

His remarks about how difficult it was to be separated from his daughter were related to his defamation lawsuit against Life & Style and In Touch magazines who did cover stories in 2012 claiming he had “abandoned” his daughter, Suri.

According to Cruise, his Catholic ex-wife and Suri’s mom, Katie Holmes, took the girl away to protect her from Cruises’ obsessive participation in Scientology.

  1. Thanks for this, Chrissy. I had a feeling his words had been taken out of context and/or distorted. I’m no fan of Tom Cruise and I think Scientology is loopy, but there’s no need to resort to distortion or deception to make things look worse than they are.
