Engagement rings are a good tradition, but more couples than you might think do without entirely. My mother-in-law never had a diamond – only a wedding band. Likewise, Gruntessa always had things that she wanted first, beginning with wedding and children and house, and the list has yet to be exhausted.

We got matching, plain, gold bands. I sensitized to metals and had to stop wearing mine. I tried getting one that had been plated with 24K gold, but that raised a rash as well, so it has been years and years and years since I wore a wedding ring of any kind. Meanwhile, Dearest has never taken his off and what with middle age and a desk job having added a few pounds, now he can’t get it off. Occasionally I wonder about the symbolic significance of my not being able to wear mine and him not being able to take his off. Hmmmm.
