Ted Cruz vowed yesterday that he’d object if Reid tried to make this easy for Republicans by passing the bill with a simple majority voice vote. Sixty votes or bust, said Cruz, just like it is for cloture on any other bill. Make everyone stand up and be counted. And so the suspense mounted: Could Mitch McConnell find five Republicans willing to join 55 Democrats in breaking a filibuster of a clean debt-ceiling hike?

I’m afraid this is beginning to border on a cult of personality for people on the left. I happen to agree with many of President Obama’s policies. But in our system it is often as important how you how you do something as what you do. I think that many people will look back at this period in history and see nothing but confusion as to why people remained so silent when the president asserted these types of unilateral actions. You have a president who is claiming the right to basically rewrite or ignore or negate federal laws. That is a very dangerous thing. It has nothing to do with the policies, it has to do with the power.

Obama plans bachelor Valentine’s Day golfing weekend in California
President Obama is traveling to California on Friday to discuss the severe drought that is threatening farmers’ livelihood and meet with the king of Jordan.
But he is also going to spend the weekend relaxing at Sunnylands, a desert estate in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
The president will spend the evening of Valentine’s Day dining with King Abdullah II of Jordan followed by two days of golf, according to a senior administration official to the New York Times.
The forecast in Rancho Mirage is calling for temperatures in the upper 80’s.
The Times reports that Michelle Obama and his daughters “will be away on their own travels” over the weekend.
