As I left this morning to head to work the temperature was six below zero. I didn’t bother with the wind chill because it was obscene. I just kept thinking,the Cubs’ pitchers and catchers report for spring training today and the NFL Combine officially starts tomorrow. DW picked up some pre-made char-broiled beef patties we fried last night,and had burgers with raw onion,tomato and mustard,just the way I like them,along with potato salad and my baked beans to pretend it was summer. We’re having BLTs for lunch. I will not give in to the mid-winter depression everybody has at the moment.

One of my favorite characters in fiction was the Ivy League liberal know-it-all Tom Clancy wrote into at least one of the Jack Ryan books. I think his name was Ben. He got an internship at the CIA because he wanted to see up close and in person just how the blood-soaked evil people there carried out all the nefarious schemes the liberals believe in. What he learned was that sitting around a sticky table and blowing hot air was not quite the same thing as making decisions that would affect actual people.

Me too … but my father didn’t tour colleges either. He rarely knew what grade I was in. One of the rare times he showed up for a school open house, he went to the wing where the K-3 rooms were. I was in 6th grade. He thought that was funny. It made me want to cry.

Things sure were different back then. I thought of my Dad as very involved, but by today’s standards, not so much. I sure never got any help at all with homework or projects for school, and it showed. I think I’m glad about that, though.

My dad was kind of hit or miss on all those things. He was a lot better about attending things the boys were doing, especially my brother’s little league games, because he was naturally a lot more interested in sports than he was in anything I was doing. I think at the time I just sort of accepted that as normal. My girls were luckier– their father was really good about going to everything they did, including ballet recitals, piano recitals, voice recitals, etc. That’s true love for you!

Maybe you can catch some fish before long. I guess the lakes will have to thaw first, though. We catch lots of Chesapeake Bay blue crabs in the summer and enjoy them. They are way too expensive to buy, but you can do well with a chicken neck, some string, and a net.

Do you really catch blue crabs, Ting? I LOVE those things! We used to catch them in the canals on the Carolina coast when we were kids and I always try to get some in Virginia when I’m there on business. When I was there in December, I stayed with a buddy in Poquoson, and his kitchen windows had a good view out over the Chesapeake. That’s huge crab country there. Over Christmas, the town wreaths on the lampposts have blue crabs wired to them instead of pinecones.
Don’t tell Zmalfoy, but I’m going to try to scrounge an invite to her mom and dad’s place for some blue crab cakes next time I’m there (Beltway area). Her mom makes the BEST. The conversation is always pretty good, too, so it’s not ALL about the crab cakes. 🙂

Man, I gotta tell you– we had almost no crab cakes last summer. The price of proper blue crab shot through the roof, so mom had to save up for special occasions. (So, we’ll need advance warning if you want some, lol).
But agreed, if there’s one good thing about the People’s Republick of Marylandistan, it’s our amazing Blue Crabs. Which is why I support actual common sense conservation of the bay and the Crab population. But only the sensible stuff. This rain tax is effing BS. . .

Really, you don’t even need to be on the Bay. All the little creeks, etc. that come off the bay and the rivers should have them in the summer. The Rappahannock has them almost all the way to Fredericksburg, even though the water is only brackish there, and not really salty anymore. I would think the Potomac would have them, too. And most of the little creeks and inlets closer to the mouths of the rivers. It is so easy. Tie the chicken neck at the end of the long string. Throw it into the water. Watch for the string to tighten up, and then slowly, slowly shorten the string, with the net in the water and ready to swoop under the crab and chicken neck as you bring it close enough to the surface to see it. It takes a few practices to get the technique down, but once you do you can catch dinner – or at least a very delicious appetizer.
We know a lot of folks who are raising oysters in beds for the sole purpose of cleaning the waters. If the waters are too close to marinas, etc. the oysters really should not be eaten, but they still serve the purpose of removing a lot of bad stuff from the water. I’m with you – the Bay is too beautiful and prolific to ruin.
