Buzz is the Best Big Brother EVER!

Bunny was okay climbing the stairs and crawling head first on to the platform, but she got confused and scared when it came to skootching around at the top of the slide. These photos are a montage from a series Mama Buzz took of Buzz helping Bunny master the slide at the end of May. I love, Love, LOVE the tenderness in his gestures. 🙂

Yesterday was a big Red Letter Day for the Mascots!

Buzz is 4½ and Bunny is 2½; both are language delayed and in therapy.  Buzz was recently diagnosed moderately autistic; they think Bunny is delayed just because she spends so much time with Buzz and copies everything he does.  But yesterday, Mama Buzz heard intelligible ENGLISH from both of them in appropriate contexts!

In the morning, Bunny told Daddy Buzz to “Get in the shower!”  In the afternoon, they had a play date with one of Buzz’s classmates. Buzz was showing off his marbles and said, “Shiny”, then when he gave them to Mama Buzz to hold, he said, “Here you go.”  In the evening, when Mama put dinner on the table, Bunny said, “Chicken!”

Mama Buzz has been watching Buzz with their books and she thinks he may have taught himself to read.  She was reading books to her little sisters at that age, so it wouldn’t surprise me.  And this may be great news for his speech.

Mama read a book written by an autistic teen-ager who explained what it’s like living inside a brain that isn’t wired like other peoples’ brains are wired. One thing he said was that he knew what he wanted to say, but was so frustrated that he couldn’t get the words to come out of his mouth.

I can see where this might be what Buzz has been experiencing.  Before they started using the picture cards, he would get so frustrated trying to express what he wanted.  His parents would say, “Use your words,” but he wouldn’t.  Couldn’t.  Some things he could express; when he wanted his art time, he’d go to the art cupboard and bang on the door.  But other things – like “I want a drink of water” – he couldn’t manage.  When his therapist taught them to use the picture cards, it freed him to initiate communication his parents could understand.

That teen said he taught himself to read and somehow that helped his brain figure out how to get the words from inside to outside. So maybe that will happen with Buzz!  They have a Veggie Tales Bible that is a full OT/NT, not a children’s abridged story book type with loads of pictures.  Buzz LOVES it.  He will sit for ages, looking at the pages and turning them slowly and in the right direction.

Also, Mama started watching his eyes when she was reading him a story and she says that when she turns a page, his eyes go straight to the text, not the picture.  And where there is a page of text on one side and a picture on the facing, his attention stays on the text side for a long time.

Mama said not to get too excited, because autistic speech can come in blurts that aren’t repeated.  It’s not like a regular kid who learns a word and then uses it regularly.  So please pray that Buzz and Bunny will both keep on keeping on with their language development.  Also that Buzz starts to eat more; he’s only a smitch bigger than Bunny. It’s very hard for Mama to get good nutrition into him, because he’s such a picky eater.  Also, potty training.  Mama would really like to be done with double diaper duty!  Thanks.

Mascot Update

Lil Buzz’s class had a field trip to a petting zoo. Mama, Buzz and Bunny got to take a cart ride (pulled by a miniature horse), enjoy a picnic and take a little walk on some nature trails.  Buzz patted a goat on his own (yay!) and Bunny patted a chicken and a baby bunny.  But it was the miniature horse that really captured her attention.  (I was horse crazy too! 🙂  She loved brushing the horse so much, she didn’t want to stop when it was time to leave.  Mama had to pick her up and physically remove her to the car LOL.

Mama and Lil Buzz washed and cut up potatoes, her hand over his hand. Then he put all the pieces in the pot by himself. This is a lot of progress for our Lil Buzz!  I’m so happy that Mama is getting such great advice and assistance to help him learn.

Mascot Update

April is National Autism Awareness Month. And boy howdy, am I ever AWARE of AUTISM this April. !!  Two weeks ago, Lil Buzz was diagnosed “moderately autistic” by a specialist in Anchorage.

2014_04 13 L&W flew to Anchorage to see specialist

This diagnosis opens up insurance coverage for a great program that’s available to him, so that’s good.  But I’m sitting here, thousands of miles away, feeling really sad.  I’m also feeling kinda guilty, because I’m disabled and think a label shouldn’t make me feel sad.

I’m really grateful to the friend who let me talk about how I’m feeling without judging, because it helped me figure out that what’s making me feel sad is that I was in a “he’ll outgrow this” place, but you don’t outgrow autism.  It helps to understand.  Now I know what to pray about.  My friend also shared this video with me.  I hope you’ll take time to watch it all. It’s really good.

Mama Buzz is a FABULOUS mom who reminds me a lot of the mom in the video.  Lil Buzz is already in some special needs programs, for speech and occupational therapy.  Mama Buzz says, “If he wasn’t enjoying it, I wouldn’t send him.”  She also loves that his teachers share what they’re doing and listen carefully to what she’s doing and what the other teachers are doing. The focus is totally on what’s best for Lil Buzz.

Tapping the Potential

Kristine Barnett’s son Jacob was diagnosed with autism when he was 2, and doctors said he would never speak. She tried special education programs and therapies aimed at addressing his limitations. When teachers told her there was no hope, she rebelled and took her own path.

“A lot of people thought that I had lost my mind,” she recalls.

Instead of focusing on Jacob’s limitations, Kristine nurtured his interests. Now her 15-year-old son is on track to win a Nobel Prize for his work in theoretical physics.

Relying on the insights she developed at her in-home daycare, Kristine resolved to follow Jacob’s “spark” — his passionate interests. Why concentrate on what he couldn’t do? Why not focus on what he could? This philosophy, along with her belief in the power of childhood play, helped her son grow in incredible ways.

“He liked repetitive behaviors. He would play with a glass and look at the light, twisting it for hours on end. Instead of taking it away, I would give him 50 glasses, fill them with water at different levels and let him explore,” she says. “I surrounded him with whatever he loved.”

The more she did that, the more it worked.

Me and Mama Buzz chatted during the eclipse

I couldn’t see the moon from my house and it rained anyway, so I watched for a while on-line. But so did a bazillion other people, because Ustream crashed! This was my last screenshot with Bunny Desktop peeking around the edge. 🙂

Mama Buzz could sit in comfort on her own bed and see the whole thing from her window. These are two pics she took with her phone. Later on, it was too dark to photograph, but she said she could see red and also Mars.

Raising our kids in a world without evil

2014_03 26 Lil Buzz

I’ve talked about the Rapture with some young moms and there is a similar lament. “But I want to raise my kids first!” Today, while looking for something else, I stumbled across Isaiah 11:6-9, which seems to teach that we will be able to not only raise our kids and enjoy our grand kids, but also do it in a world without evil.

Then the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat;
The calf and the young lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide them.
The cow and the bear shall graze, together their young shall lie down;
the lion shall eat hay like the ox.
The baby shall play by the viper’s den,
and the child lay his hand on the adder’s lair.
They shall not harm or destroy on all my holy mountain;
for the earth shall be filled with knowledge of the LORD, as water covers the sea.

The photo of Lil Buzz was taken 2 days ago. Just think … if we get Raptured soon, we’ll not only all be together, but I’ll have a glorified body that can run and play again!
