I altered the text somewhat, because Obama is NOT a lawyer and that’s something I think needs to be more generally known. He WAS a lawyer. So was Michelle. But NEITHER of them is a lawyer now. He retired. She had her license revoked by court order.

A lawyer I know mentioned to me that her assistant is a former lawyer. I was puzzled and asked her how someone becomes a former lawyer. She said a few people, like her assistant, go through all the pain and expense of law school and passing the bar exam, then find out they HATE being lawyers and voluntarily retire or simply allow their licenses to lapse.
But most former lawyers lose their licenses because they misbehave. Some have their licenses revoked by court order. Others formally retire rather than face charges that could become public record.
When Michelle and Barack were asked about their lack of law licenses, they said they had decided not to waste money on license renewals because they’d decided to “sacrifice” themselves and work in the public sector. This is how they became multi-millionaires with a lifetime pension and never-ending, gold-plated health care benefits … by sacrificing themselves on the altar of public service.
Anyway, it’s a lot of bologna. The cost of keeping a professional license current is minimal; the cost of getting re-licensed is enormous. Doctors, nurses, architects, lawyers etc. … they don’t let their licenses lapse to save a few bucks, even if they don’t plan to practice again any time soon. It’s prestigious to have the license, it’s handy if a loved one needs a favor, and anyway, they might want to practice down the road, maybe dabble part time.
Besides, I found evidence of three very high profile career politicians who not only kept their law licenses current, but who had them suspended or revoked only after they left office. The reasons the courts cited may shed light on why the Obamas are no longer authorized to practice.
Bill Clinton, Governor of Arkansas and President of the United States, had his law license suspended by the court for 5 years (with a $25,000 fine) for “giving knowingly evasive and misleading discovery responses concerning his relationship with Monica Lewinsky.”

Spiro Agnew, Governor of Maryland and Vice President of the United States, lost his license after he left the White House. The court noted that disbarment follows as a matter of course “when a member of the bar is shown to be willfully dishonest for personal gain by means of fraud, deceit, cheating or like conduct.”

Richard Nixon, Congressman, Vice President and President, had his law license stripped after he left the White House, because the court found him guilty of the “most serious offense” of obstructing justice in the Watergate affair.

Wow, Chrissy, I’m impressed by the thoroughness of your research! Thanks for the history lesson and all the interesting info!
It seems astounding to me that someone can slog through three years of law school (which is no day at the beach), and pass the bar exam (which is far from easy), and only then discover that he/she hates being a lawyer. But I know it happens. I know one young lady who did exactly that. She is now retired from lawyering, married to a minister, and mother of one adorable little boy with another on the way. And I know dozens of other people who wasted many years of their lives in school training for jobs that they ended up hating. Most end up changing careers, though a few stick it out and continue to do jobs they detest. Hard for me to imagine! Getting out of bed in the morning is difficult enough for me as it is, so I don’t even want to know how much worse it would be if I had to get up and go to a job that I hated!

I knew a lady who went through law school with a toddler, had a baby during law school, and hated being a lawyer. Last I saw her, she was managing some theater company. And I dated a guy in college who wrote to me later saying he was hating medical school, but thought he’d like being a doctor. I googled him some years ago and discovered he’s the head medical bean counter for one of the big airlines. Methinks he hated being a doctor too.

Love the “Obama is a skinny Democrat” graphics! Some day, some enterprising soul is going to find a way to discover the reasons behind the law license stuff, and release it to the public. What an interesting day that will be.

Can’t take credit for the graphic. I had to crop it from the original to fit the text around it, so I stuck the URL on the bottom edge of the bill.
