I occasionally see polls that separate the views of the “political class” inside the beltway from the views of the rest of us, aka “American taxpayers who vote.” The disconnect inside the beltway is remarkable. It’s one reason I was so DELIGHTED to learn that even after 14 years, Ryan still lives in and commutes from his real HOME in Wisconsin.
I’m reminded of a wonderful scene in one of my favorite political movies, Dave. The scum-sucking wheeler-dealer who has deliberately put a look-alike in the Oval Office (played by Frank Langella) is outmaneuvered by the look-alike and the First Lady and has a DC sized hissy fit.
He bellows about how the look-alike is nobody … “navel lint” … whereas HE, a beltway insider, was in Who’s Who in DC umpteen times. He ultimately ends up alone with his now useless campaign signs.
I often wonder if these types try to wow God out of sending them to Hell by telling Him how Very Important they were in Washington.

I haven’t done any poll watching in a long time, but the funniest thing to me was at the end of the night, after the precinct manager came up with the final tallies, she was required to go outside to call out into the darkness the results from the precinct. It was a holdover from bygone days when people actually waited around to hear the news!
