Rise of the Guardians is a fun flick on its own merits, but as a Christian allegory, it’s simply wonderful. Jack Frost, as a type for Jesus, dies saving his sister’s life, carries a shepherd’s crook and defeats the Boogeyman, even sending him into an “abyss” at the end!
The other guardians sum up Christian spirituality – Christmas (who travels through the air like the angels on Christmas night) and Easter (who travels via tunnels in the ground, popping out at the end) are obvious. But the Tooth Fairy (who stores good memories) and the Sandman (keeper of good dreams and hope) round out the group very nicely.
The animation is gorgeous and there are some really fun things tossed in. E.g., the goofball elves who don’t actually make toys. Santa just lets them think they do … watch the movie to find out who really does it. There are at least two blatant Harry Potter references plus some ginormous stone Easter eggs that are clearly an Easter Island reference that totally cracked me up. Nothing was made of them. I think they were just there to amuse whoever noticed.
I watched the special features and am quite sure the makers of the film had no intention of telling a Christian tale. God clearly had other ideas.
