I first started actually paying serious attention to world events around the time that the shah of Iran was deposed (whoopee!)… only to be replaced by the ayatollahs (boooo!)… so that’s always the first question I ask when a government official/dictator/monarch/whatever gets overthrown: Who’s gonna replace him? Most of the time, sadly, it ends up being just one more case of out of the frying pan, into the fire.

Ugh, I remember that. It wasn’t assigned at my school, but I read it on my own.
This morning I had to take the teenager to the oral surgeon to get her impacted wisdom teeth dug out. They were running behind schedule and we were stuck in the waiting room for about half an hour. The TV was on, of course, as it always is in waiting rooms these days. Remember the days when waiting rooms didn’t have televisions, and people sat quietly and read a book or magazine or did a crossword puzzle while they waited? Anyway, the TV was tuned to one of those horrible channels that is all celebrity gossip all the time, and we were forced to listen to a bunch of morons excitedly and breathlessly chattering away about Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s new baby — What will they name it??? How soon will we get to see the first pictures??? Which magazine/website will they choose for the first pictures??? How much do magazines/websites pay to get exclusive rights to the first baby pictures??? — and so on ad nauseam. We don’t have TV at home, so on those rare occasions when I am subjected to it against my will, it always comes as a shock to my system. People watch this stuff voluntarily? People CARE about this stuff? No wonder our country is in so much trouble! After my daughter’s surgery was over and I managed to wake her up, drag her to the car, and get her home, she still couldn’t talk because her mouth was stuffed with gauze, but she wrote me a note saying that the worst part of the whole ordeal was being stuck in that waiting room and being forced to listen to celebrity gossip.
Anyway, just imagine having to be subjected to that stuff all the time — half an hour of it was enough to push me to the brink of a screaming fit! Having to listen to Obozo and not be able to turn it off would be even worse punishment. I’d actually rather hear about Kim Kardashian’s baby than have to listen to Obozo.

Here’s the thing about TV in waiting rooms — it’s not just annoying, it’s completely unnecessary, now that all the youngsters have smart phones where they can watch whatever they want to watch right on their phone. (We old folks, who couldn’t operate a smart phone if our lives depended on it, show up at the doctor’s office with a book or a magazine to read.) I have been in waiting rooms where the TV was blaring away while everyone in the room other than me had their eyes glued to their smart phone screens.
Every once in a while I’ll be the only one in the waiting area, and the first thing I do is go turn the volume on the TV down to zero so I can read my book in peace.

Ditto. I’m not disabled yet, but if I had to take a job someplace with a TV that was always on, I’d end up on disability (for complete mental breakdown) very quickly. Or I’d end up in jail for having shot the television. Either way, the taxpayers would have to take care of me.

Our small town Doc use to charge 5 bucks a visit, and we paid his wife in cash when we left. That was before they were afraid to make an educated opinion on anything, and had to run expensive tests and invasive procedures so that they were not sued if their educated guess turns out to be wrong.

Dearest told me about a doctor who came to his Rotary meeting to talk about his new cash-only clinic. No electronic records. I like it. The medical care in this country is going to be black market very soon.

There’s one doc in our town so far who runs a cash-only operation, but I suspect there will be more before too long.
My chiropractor was joking (but only half joking) that soon people are going to be coming in wanting to barter for his services — offering to trade a chicken for an adjustment. I said it might be happening sooner than you think.
Last month I needed some cheesecakes for a party at church to honor our students who were graduating, so I asked my middle daughter, who loves to bake, if I could hire her to make them. She said yes, but instead of money, she asked for a chicken and some beef from my freezer. It worked out great. I got my cheesecakes, she got her meat, everyone was happy.

That ‘earn less’ thing is also a crock. It’s based on just dumping all professions together and dividing. It totally ignores that women often CHOOSE lower paid professions, because they want more flexible hours or longer vacays or just prefer that kind of work.
For a long time, women have outnumbered men in college graduating classes. THAT should’ve been a day to celebrate, so we could all go home and relax. Or join the Tea Party. But the FemiNazis are pawns of the Democrat Party, whose real power brokers don’t want to win good causes. They only want power.
And their protest-y pawns cooperate because they enjoy the adrenaline rush of protesting and being angry and feeling all over self-righteous and important when cameras get shoved in their faces. For them, the game itself is the point. Winning would mean the game was over and that would be bad, because then they’d need to get actual lives.
One of the people who is featured in the anti-Global Warming documentary, “Not Evil, Just Wrong”, is the guy who founded Greenpeace. He says the organization fulfilled its purpose to raise awareness and get businesses to stop polluting. But those who live to agitate didn’t care that they’d won.
He said they actually wanted to go after a ban on chlorine. He told them, “I don’t think banning one of the natural elements on the periodic table is within our purview.” He left the organization and now repudiates their work.

I was just over at Quiner’s Diner, and saw Tom Quiner’s answer to the question that Miss Utah made such a hash of, about the so-called wage gap between men and women. Here’s how Tom says he would have answered the question:
“Thank-you for such a relevant question, Ms. Leakes. What does the substance of your question say about society? It simply says that women make different choices than men. That’s all.
“A wage gap doesn’t exist, at least, not according to the Department of Labor. They studied it in real detail in 2009. I’m going from memory of course, but roughly here is what they concluded:
“This study leads to the unambiguous conclusion that the differences in the compensation of men and women are the result of a multitude of factors and that the raw wage gap should not be used as the basis to justify corrective action. Indeed, there may be nothing to correct. The differences in raw wages may be almost entirely the result of the individual choices being made by both male and female workers.”
“So what are some of these individual choices? Men choose different career paths. For example, men are more likely to pursue riskier jobs that pay more because of the danger inherit in the work, jobs such as construction work and iron and steel work.
“Even more, men are more likely to go into high paying fields (by choice), such as computer and engineering fields, while women tend to go in more modest paying fields (by choice) such as health care.
“Men are more likely to pursue jobs that pay more because the jobs demand evening and weekend work.
“Men tend to stay in jobs longer, increasing their income over women who are more likely to interrupt their career to raise children.
“Men work longer hours, on average 15 percent more than women. How could they NOT get paid more?
“But here’s what is really interesting, Ms. Leakes: the Census Bureau tells us that unmarried women who have never had a child actually earn more than unmarried men.
“Is that a reflection of anti-male discrimination? Not really, because more women are going to college than men these days.
“So, Ms. Leakes, the implication of your question is wrong, that there is some sort of anti-women discrimination at work in society.
“My words may be politically incorrect, but an enlightened judge such as yourself will certainly appreciate such honesty from a beauty pageant contestant.
“So there is good news for America: the wage gap is a myth!”

Does “administrative leave” include paychecks and bennies? Just wondering, cuz my understanding of “furlough” is that it’s unpaid and forced “vacation”. Allegedly, because of “sequester”, air traffic controllers were “furloughed” … are they all Republicans or something? Or did they check the bumpers and voter records before deciding who got sent home without pay? I totally wouldn’t put it past them.
