Unreal. Do ya’ll have any idea how much this is going to slow down and turn off the really gifted math kids? They will not have the patience for this nonsense and it will just turn them off to the whole subject. This is really, really bad stuff. I’m not even sure it is suitable for special ed curriculum, to be honest. Start saving for your grand children’s private school tuition, if it hasn’t been outlawed by then. I fully expect home schooling to come under attack soon. It has already started, really.

IMO, it’s part of the overall plan to destroy America. People who can’t even add and subtract aren’t going to be inventing anything worth selling.

My daughter had perfect grades and loved school, until Common Core was forced upon the students & teachers when she was in 3rd grade. Suddenly my happy gifted child was crying in class daily and was absolutely miserable. My son had started Kindergarten that same year and K went from the half day that it had always been and became a full day Common Core ordeal for 5 & 6 year olds. My son hated it and cried every day. By January of that year, they tried to tell me that there was something wrong with my kids, because of course school officials are prohibited from admitting that Common Core is detrimental to young children. I pulled the kids out, midyear, and began homeschooling them, and the crying stopped. I am still working to undo the damage they did to my children’s confidence in their own intellectual capabilities. IMHO, Kindergarten should be a happy time; a GENTLE introduction to formal education, and if little kids HATE Kindergarten, then the school is doing it WRONG.

Absolutely. Gruntessa and I were just out on a walk last night lamenting about this. So many smart kids being artificially turned into “failures” by this bizarre system.

My daughter misses her school friends, but not enough to go back to the place that made her cry EVERY SINGLE DAY that she was intellectually assaulted by Conman Core.

I had an interesting exchange with a member of our school board (who is a member of my Blog Emailing list … my “bloggy buds” to whom I send my blogs personally by email, because they prefer it that way):
Him: If for the sake of explicative clarity the teacher can write 8 + 2 = 10 in parenthesis, why not just leave it at that? You know, something like, “Oh, by the way, 8 + 5 = 13.” Works for me, who daily in his work life does use Common Core-like mental math to compute invoices, e.g.: 73 waste tires @ $1.65 per tire = {73 + (1/2 of 73)} + a tenth of the sum in brackets — easily enough done in your head.
Me: I learned that trick too … but later on, not in grade school.
Him: Exactly — teach arithmetic for starters, and mathematics later.
Our school board has an info for the public meeting on Common Core that Dearest plans to attend. In the 30 years we’ve lived here, I’ve been generally very happy with the quality of our school board. They’re local people who work hard to make the budgets work for the kids. Still, I’m relieved to know we have one common sense ally in this Common Core thing.
