The Chicago Cubs have called Wrigley Field home since 1918. (To the intellectually challenged, that was the year we defeated the Huns and a year before the infamous Black Sox scandal.) Up until last night they had never won a championship of any kind in that venerated shrine. While they still must face either the Dodgers or the Mets in a best-of-seven series for the National League pennant, a feat they last accomplished in 1945, to advance to the World Series, which they last won in 1908, hope still springs eternal.
The Cubs are the team that can make October belong to baseball again
October used to be baseball’s domain, the time when the rest of the sporting world understood its second-fiddle status. Football owns the month now, the vise grip of the NFL and the allure of college unrelenting, unbreakable save for the one trump card baseball can play.
“If the Chicago Cubs are participating in the playoffs, football can wait,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “With what we’ve been able to accomplish here … I’d like to believe we’re putting baseball at the forefront right now.”

WAS THERE ANYTHING ELSE GOING ON LAST NIGHT?
OH, YEAH.
AS IOWAHAWK PUT IT, BASEBALL ON TBS, SOFTBALL ON CNN.
I watched the game, as most people in these parts did, but I happened to switch over to CNN for about 30 seconds. My string of bad luck unbroken, it was when a doddering old Communist shouted: ‘We’re sick and tired of hearing about your e-mails!’
That moment settled for all time this was a Hillary coronation. The crowd, especially the press, went wild. Hillary agreed with him and shook his hand, satisfied he’d done his job.
The catch line was so effective that a man who works at our depot came in this morning and parroted the line and exclaimed he didn’t want to hear any more about it. I said nothing, content in the fact I have a battery-operated fish in my closet that has a higher I.Q. than he does.
I would not torture you with the entire debate and there weren’t many short clips available on youtube. At least not yet.
I did find one with the high (?) points of last night’s snooze fest. Much more to come in the comments.

Bernie Sanders thinks America is ‘sick and tired of hearing about’ Hillary Clinton’s ‘damn emails’

Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders found something they could both agree on at the Democratic presidential debate on Tuesday evening. Both rivals said there has been far too much attention paid to the scandal surrounding Clinton’s use of a private email server when she was secretary of state and not enough focus on real “issues.”
An exasperated Sanders actually took things a step further than Clinton and declared that people are “sick and tired” of hearing about the “damn emails.”
“Enough of the emails!” he said.
Sanders’ comments led the pair to share a handshake and a laugh

Ol’ Man River may be on to something here. I think America is sick and tired of hearing about:
1) Global Warming
2) Black Lives Matter
3) Income Inequality
4) Racism
5) Gays in general, Caitlyn Jenner specifically
6) Bush lied us into Iraq (a dozen-plus mentions last night)
7) War on Women
8) Evil Koch Bros.
9) Gun Control (aka confiscation)
10 thru infinity) Barack. Hussein. Obama.
So let’s clean house, Uncle Bern. We’ll shut up about Clinton’s demagogic and imperious Alternative Governent Feifdom, you shut up about Evil Corporations. Fair?
And in the future, we can sit down once a week and mutually determine what should and should not be discussed in our First Amendment Republic. After all, you can’t build an incipient Animal Farm without fences.

Everyone but Jim Webb Says Black Lives Matter

THIS IS SO PATHETIC
At Tuesday’s CNN debate, the Democrats all endorsed the movement, with Sanders invoking Sandra Bland and Clinton pushing for criminal justice reform. Only Jim Webb refused to go along.
“Black lives matter,” Sanders responded to uproarious cheers.
“And the reason—the reason those words matter is the African-American community knows that on any given day some innocent person like Sandra Bland can get into a car, and then three days later she’s going to end up dead in jail,” he said, his voice rising.

The reference to Sandra Bland reminds me of the old joke about 200 lawyers at the bottom of the ocean, and I’ll leave it at that.
I think it was Geraghty who said Sanders shows what it would look like if Larry David ran for office.

TV Ratings: First Democratic Debate on CNN Draws 15.3M Viewers

I CAN’T IMAGINE THERE WERE THAT MANY PEOPLE WITH NOTHING ELSE TO DO
A best for the Democrats, it nearly doubles the previous cable record set in 2008.
Who needs Donald Trump? CNN’s second debate on Tuesday night — and the first among the Democratic field — lured 15.3 million viewers, according to Fast National ratings from Nielsen. That’s a best for the Democratic party, eclipsing the 10.7 million record on broadcast and the 8.3 million for CNN — both in 2008

‘Screw unity’: Hillary says she’s most proud of making enemies out of Republicans
Towards the end of Tuesday’s CNN-hosted Democratic presidential debate, moderator Anderson Cooper asked the candidates which enemies they were proud to have made over the course of their political careers.
“In addition to the NRA, the health insurance companies, the drug companies, the Iranians… probably the Republicans,” said Hillary Clinton.
The Democratic crowd in attendance cheered her choosing millions of Americans as enemy number one over Iran.

Democrats Crash Off the Rails: Hillary an ‘Outsider,’ Bernie Wants a ‘Revolution’

The clown car that is the Democratic field in 2016—if one could call it a field, since there are only two candidates above one percent in the polls—was up and running on Tuesday evening for two and a half hours.
Perhaps the biggest moment of the night came when CNN’s Anderson Cooper—the only shining “star,” on stage—asked Clinton about O’Malley’s comments earlier this year about how the “presidency is not a crown to be passed back and forth between two royal families.”

Bill Clinton On Hillary’s Debate Performance: “She Won”…
Friend —
Last night, Hillary showed everyone what you and I already know: She’s the single most qualified candidate to be the next President of the United States.
The plans she talked about will make life better for families all across America — I know she’ll fight for them every single day from the Oval Office.
If you’re ready to double down on progress like raising wages for hard-working Americans and reforming our laws to prevent gun violence, chip in $1 to support Hillary right now:

Wasserman Schultz said electing and then re-electing a black president shows the diversity in the party. “When I was watching the debate what I was thinking was the Democratic Party lacked diversity. I didn’t see a Latino, or an African-American, or an Asian on that stage,” Ramos observed. “Well, we have Latinos and African-Americans,” Wasserman Schultz boasted. “Our president of the United States, who is a Democrat, is African-American. So certainly we have an absolute demonstrateive commitment to diversity, because out party nominated the first African-American and then Americans elected him not once, but twice.”

Blinded By The White: Jesse Jackson Defends Lack Of Diversity At Dem Debate

Because it isn’t about race, even though you may use that as your hammer, it’s always just about how left you are.
With five white candidates, Democrats are fielding their least racially diverse line-up since 1992. Republicans, on the other hand, have four minority candidates. Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson is black. Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz are of Cuban descent. And Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is Indian-American. (RELATED: Twitter Can’t Get Over How White The Dem Debate Is)
But that racial imbalance doesn’t bother the 74-year-old Jackson, who ran for president on the Democratic ticket in 1984 and 1988.

Not a wise anecdote, there Hills.
