Support Professor Carol Swain

The Tolerance Police, who have taken it upon themselves to destroy the peace and prosperity of anyone who doesn’t agree with them on every jot and tittle, have targeted Professor Carol Swain of Vanderbilt University.

2015_11 16 Petition to support Carol Swain

Swain was a school dropout and teenage mother. Today, she is a professor of law and political science at Vanderbilt University and the author of numerous award-winning books. She has even been cited by the Supreme Court.

Swain is a both black and female, which should score her a +2 in the Leftist’s Privileged Classes Lottery. Unfortunately, she is also a politically conservative Christian who makes no secret of her personal beliefs, which earns her a -2,000,000 in the LPC Lottery.

Swain says all but one of the allegations listed against her in the petition are lies. The one that has a smidgen of truth is that she did post part of student’s disrespectful letter to her on her Facebook page and included a link to that student’s public Facebook.

Swain has since deleted that post and says, “Maybe I shouldn’t have done that, but the student contacted me. My point in showing it was to show the level of disrespect and what I have to put up with at Vanderbilt University with this person saying I was a disgrace.”

“It’s something that has changed in the student body, that they think they can control what people do, not just inside the classroom, but outside the classroom,” Swain said.

I see two ironies in this situation.

One, I was graduated way back in 1976 and I endured repeated ridicule of my beliefs by professors, teaching assistants, and classmates. It’s obvious the problem is much, much worse now, but I’m not seeing conservative Christians trying to destroy anyone’s reputation or deprive them of their livelihood the way these Leftist activists are doing. This is not surprising, given that Jesus told His followers to turn the other cheek, while the Left tells its followers to punch back harder and to bring a gun to a knife fight.

Two, Carol Swain is a professor of law and political science. Are her students seriously getting their delicate princess panties in a bunch over someone saying things they don’t agree with? I mean … SERIOUSLY?! Did they miss the part about how our legal and political systems are essentially adversarial?!

I dug into the story and discovered the ringleader of the effort to suspend Professor Swain is an LGBT activist.

What a shock. Not.

Addendum: In researching this, I came across a really good article about why “turn the other cheek” does not mean we Christians are supposed to allow ourselves to be passive doormats for abusive bullies.

“Jesus was using a common rabbinical teaching tool known as ‘hyperbole’ in order to accentuate an important point. He did not intend that line to be taken in a strict, literal, and absolute sense. In fact, Jesus uses hyperbole throughout the Sermon on the Mount. For some reason, the ‘judge not’ and ‘turn the other cheek’ passages get an inordinate amount of air-time.”

He gives other examples, such as “If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away. (5:29)”
