SOME TURKEY DAY SMILES

Thanksgiving is far and away the heaviest day in the newspaper delivery business. It is an ode to our unexpurgated greed, as we give thanks for our blessings just before we push and shove to get an iPad that’s on sale for cheap. The Chicago Tribunes I deliver will have about 1200 pages, including the news and the sale ads. This will be my fourth year and I still dread it. To top it off, I started coming down sick Monday and it’s gotten progressively worse. There is every possibility DW will make the trek to her daughter’s house for the holiday while I dine on chicken soup. I’ll just have my turkey and stuffing when I no longer feel like 10 pounds of Durbin in a one pound bag.

I’m posting a couple seasonal images. I can do at least that much without messing it up.

    Happy Thanksgiving everyone. We went to Boston for a quick trip over the weekend to see my brother in law’s play. He has been working on it for 3 years and Opening Night was last Wed. and we saw it on Sat. So far, it is the second highest grossing play in the theater’s history! It was great to see his hard work on display and we loved the play, which is based on one of our favorite books, “A Confederacy of Dunces.” Very funny, and yet very poignant at the end. If you are in New England it is running through Dec. 20 at the Huntington Theater and you will thoroughly enjoy it.

    Being away was fun but now I am paying for it because we are having about 25-30 people for dinner on Thanksgiving. I am cooking 2 turkeys and a turkey breast, and all the other stuff that goes with it, but other folks are bringing desserts. I need to get in gear and brine those turkeys, clean my house, polish the silver, iron the linens, etc. I’ll be thinking about all of you and hoping for a Happy Thanksgiving for you all.

    No Black Friday shopping for me. I never have, because I can’t stand big crowds and there is nothing that I have ever needed that would be worth it to me. But I must admit that a TV that I have been thinking about was on sale for Black Friday at 40% off, so I bought it online with free delivery. We still have the big old console RCA tv that is 40 years old and still works perfectly, but perfectly for then doesn’t seem so great now, once you have had a peek at the picture on a newer one! At the rate we watch, we will need this new one to last another 40 years to get our money’s worth!
