1A: The DOJ has opened a civil rights investigation into Washington State Senate Bill 5375, which was signed into law on May 2, 2025 by Governor Bob Ferguson.

The new law adds “members of the clergy” to a list of professionals who are required to report information received in a confessional setting relating to child abuse or neglect to law enforcement or other state authorities.

The Code of Canon Law forbids priests from divulging information received in confession. The penalty for a priest who directly violates the seal of confession is excommunication. Washington priests and bishops have made it clear that clergy will go to jail before they comply with the new law.

Police got involved, so the protesters got into it with them too. Arrests were made. Afterwards, the Seattle mayor condemned the Christians for holding a “far-right rally” and demanded an investigation into how they got that permit.
