HEALTH: A new, peer-reviewed study entitled “Fructose and glucose from sugary drinks enhance colorectal cancer metastasis via SORD” has been published in Nature Metabolism. It reports on research showing that drinking sugary beverages can increase the risk of colorectal cancer spreading in the body.
In the U.S., colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer (excluding skin cancers), with about 150,000 new cases diagnosed annually. It affects both men and women, typically older adults, though incidence is rising in younger populations. Risk factors include age (over 50), family history, inflammatory bowel disease, and lifestyle factors like diet and smoking. Screening, like colonoscopies, has reduced mortality by catching it early. Globally, it’s also a major cancer type, with higher rates in developed countries.
