AMERICAN HISTORY: On March 6, 1857, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 7-2 in Dred Scott v. Sandford that Scott, an enslaved person, was not a U.S. citizen and therefore could not sue for his freedom in federal court. It also ruled that slavery could not be banned from any federal territory. The decision deepened the national divide over slavery in the years leading up to the Civil War.
DEMOCRATS: Senators Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.) co-sponsored a procedural vote to block the president’s ability to wage war against Iran without congressional approval. It failed 47 to 53.
Before the vote, Senate Democrat Leader Chuck Schumer said, “Today every senator — every single one — will pick a side.” With two exceptions – Rand Paul and John Fetterman – the senators voted with their parties.
