Taking a closer look at the Trumpets and Bowls

Trumpet and Bowl Angels

Revelation 1 … 12 I saw seven gold lamp stands 13 and in the midst of the lamp stands [Jesus], wearing an ankle-length robe, with a gold sash around his chest. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars. 20 The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lamp stands are the seven churches.

Revelation 4 … 2 A throne was there in heaven, and on the throne sat 3 [God]. 5 Seven flaming torches burned in front of the throne, which are the seven spirits of God. 6 Around the throne, there were four living creatures covered with eyes in front and in back.

Revelation 8 … 2 And I saw that the seven angels who stood before God were given seven trumpets.

Revelation 11 … 15 Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet. There were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world now belongs to our Lord and to his Anointed, and he will reign forever and ever.”

Revelation 15 … 5 The temple that is the heavenly tent of testimony opened, 6 and the seven angels with the seven plagues came out of the temple. They were dressed in clean white linen, with a gold sash around their chests. 7 One of the four living creatures gave the seven angels seven gold bowls filled with the fury of God, who lives forever and ever.

Revelation 16 … 17 The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air. A loud voice came out of the temple from the throne, saying, “It is done.”

Parsing the evidence above, I believe it is reasonable to conclude:

The Trumpets and Bowls are parallel descriptions of seven punishments.

  • Trumpet Seven marks the final defeat of evil and the end of Great Tribulation. (Rev 11:15)
  • Bowl Seven marks the final defeat of evil and the end of Great Tribulation. (Rev 16:17)

The seven Trumpet Angels are the seven spirits of God.

  • Before God’s throne are seven flaming torches who are the seven spirits of God. (Rev 4:5)
  • The angels who receive the trumpets are “the seven angels who stood before God.” (Rev 8:2)

The seven Bowl Angels are the angels of the churches in the temple. (Rev 15:5, 6-7)

  • The plague angels who come out of the temple wear gold sashes like Jesus’. (Rev 1:13, Rev 15:6)
  • Jesus wears this sash in the midst the lamp stands which are the churches. (Rev 1:12, 20)
  • Jesus holds the angels (stars) in his right hand, signifying he has authority to command them. (Rev 1:16, 20)
  • Who but Jesus would have the authority to give the Bowl Angels the plagues they will pour out with God’s fury? (Rev 15:6)

This generation will not pass away

After describing the Great Tribulation and the Rapture, Jesus told his disciples,

“Learn a lesson from the fig tree. When its branch becomes tender and sprouts leaves, you know that summer is near.  In the same way, when you see all these things, know that he is near, at the gates.  Amen, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place.”  
– Matthew 24:32-34

Because figs are an ancient symbol for the Hebrew nation, some Bible scholars interpret this passage to mean that the End Times will happen within the lifetime of those who were alive when the modern nation of Israel was reborn.

Old Testament fig symbols

Fig trees = A characteristic of the wealth of the Holy Land

“The Lord, your God, is bringing you into a good country, a land with streams of water, with springs and fountains welling up in the hills and valleys, a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, of olive trees and of honey, a land where you will always have bread and where you will lack nothing.” – Deuteronomy 8:7-9

A fig tree = A characteristic of peace and prosperity in Israel under godly leadership

“Thus Judah and Israel lived in security, everyone under their own vine and fig tree from Dan to Beer-sheba, as long as Solomon lived.” – 1 Kings 5:5 NABRE  [N.b., in some translations, this is numbered 1 Kings 4:25.]

Good figs = A symbol of faithful Jews in exile

In the 6th century BC, Jeremiah prophesied:  “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: “Like these good figs, I will also regard with favor Judah’s exiles whom I sent away from this place into the land of the Chaldeans. I will look after them for good and bring them back to this land, to build them up, not tear them down; to plant them, not uproot them.” – Jeremiah 24:5-6

Tending a fig tree = Being a good servant

“Those who tend a fig tree eat its fruit; so those attentive to their master will be honored.” – Proverbs 27:18

If Jesus intended “this generation” (Matthew 24:34 ) to mean people who were alive when modern Israel was reborn on May 14, 1948, then the End Times are imminent.

“Seventy is the sum of our years, or eighty, if we are strong.”  – Psalm 90:10

A child born on or before May 14, 1948 will be 70 years old in the spring of 2018.

Gazing on the Two Witnesses

Revelation 11:1-14 prophesies that God will send two witnesses to preach in Jerusalem for the first 3½ years of the last 7 years of all time. At the mid-point of this last “week” of years, God will allow the Beast to kill them. After this, Scripture says:

“Those from every people, tribe, tongue, and nation will gaze on their corpses for three and a half days.”
[Rev 11:9]

Such a thing would have been impossible until fairly recently. However, with the invention and widespread use of satellite television, portable communications devices and the Internet, such a thing is now more than possible.

The Happy Ending

The following is an Our Daily Bread meditation by Philip Yancey.

“I saw a new heaven and a new earth.” —Revelation 21:1

In its “plot,” the story of the Bible ends up very much where it began. The broken relationship between God and human beings has healed over at last, and the curse of Genesis 3 is lifted. Borrowing images from Eden, Revelation pictures a river and a tree of life (Rev. 22:1-2).

But this time a great city replaces the garden setting – city filled with worshipers of God. No death or sadness will ever darken that scene. When we awake in the New Heaven and New Earth, we will have at last a happy ending.

Heaven is not an afterthought or an optional belief. It is the final justification of all creation. The Bible never belittles human tragedy and disappointment – any book more painfully honest? – it does add one key word: temporary.

What we feel now, we will not always feel. The time for re-creation will come.

For people who feel trapped in pain or in a broken home, in economic misery or in fear – for all of us – Heaven promises a timeless future of health and wholeness and pleasure and peace. The Bible begins with the promise of a Redeemer in the book of Genesis (3:15) and ends with that same promise (Rev. 21:1-7) – a guarantee of future reality.

The end will be the beginning.

The Shemitah and Satan’s Century

Last March, I published an article called “A Century of Trial” in which I explained about why I believe that God granted Satan a century of extra power to get ready for the End Times.  You can review this article @ https://polination.wordpress.com/2014/03/21/a-century-of-trial/.

Right now, I am reading “The Mystery of the Shemitah” by Jonathan Cahn, which is a sequel to his astonishing book “The Harbinger: the Ancient Mystery that holds the secret of America’s Future.” If you have not yet read these, I recommend you do so soon. In these books, Cahn provides compelling Biblical evidence of God’s involvement in world events and how He is warning us of the coming End Times.

I can’t get into all that he exposes in these books, because it’s too complicated. If you’ve read them, you’ll get something out of this blog. If not, maybe what I write here will inspire you to get his books and read them. They’re both shorter than they look (big fonts) and, because he repeats his basic points again and again (and again), they aren’t brain-busters to understand. If you’re impatient or not into reading, I’ve linked below to three YouTube video interviews with Cahn about his books.

I made an Excel file to list Shemitah years with Cahn’s analysis of the signs; then, I added some Catholic stuff and took a screenshot so I could post it here. Isn’t the Rapture just the In-gathering for Final Judgment?

This is a common idea, but it doesn’t hold up under scrutiny. Shortly before He was arrested and crucified, Jesus took some of His disciples to the Mount of Olives for a final teaching about the End Times. In this teaching, which is known as the Olivet Discourse, the Lord gave us enough information to be certain that the Rapture and the In-gathering for Final Judgment will be separate events.

N.b., the Olivet Discourse appears in all three Synoptic Gospels. The fullest treatment is Matthew 24-25.  In Mark, it appears in chapter 13; in Luke, it is split between chapters 17 and 21.

Jesus listed four SKY SIGNS (Olivet Discourse) for when He comes in the CLOUDS:

1. The sun will be darkened.
2. The moon will not give its light.
3. The stars will fall from the sky.
4. The sign of the Son of Man will appear.

Three of these match the sky signs John saw (Rev 6:12-14) in the Seal Six event:

1. The sun turned black.
2. The moon became like blood.
3. The stars fell to the earth.
4. The sky divided like a torn scroll.

The sun and moon signs also match Joel’s (Joel 3:4-5) End Times prophecy:

1. The sun will darken.
2. The moon will turn blood-red.
3. Everyone who calls upon the name of the LORD will escape harm.

These SKY SIGNS do not match those given for the Final In-gathering.

  • TRUMPET SEVEN: “The seventh angel blew his trumpet. There were flashes of lightning, peals of thunder, an earthquake and a violent hailstorm.” (Revelation 11:15,19)
  • BOWL SEVEN: “The seventh angel poured out his bowl. There were lightning flashes, peals of thunder a great earthquake and large hailstones.” (Revelation 16:17,18,21)

There is nothing here about the sun or the moon. Moreover, instead of stars (fire) falling from the sky, there are gigantic hailstones (ice).

Jesus also said of the Rapture that only SOME will be gathered.

I tell you, on that night, they will see the Son of Man coming in a CLOUD with power and great glory. He will send out his angels with a trumpet blast, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the earth to the other. There will be two people in one bed; one will be taken, the other left. And there will be two women grinding meal together; one will be taken, the other left. There will be two men in the field; one will be taken, the other left behind. (Olivet Discourse)

Contrast this with Jesus’ description of the Final In-gathering.

When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious THRONE, and all the nations will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. (Olivet Discourse)

Google Stalking the Number of the Beast

The number of the Beast is named only once, in Revelation 13:18. It is usually given as 666, but some ancient Greek texts give it as 616.

In some manuscripts, the number is written out literally – ἑξακόσιοι ἑξήκοντα ἕξ = pron. hexakósioi hexēkonta héx = meaning six-hundred sixty six.  (TRIVIA: Fear of the number 666 is hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia.)

In other manuscripts, the number is written in Greek numerals.

Below are two 3d century examples of papyrus manuscripts, one that has 666 and one that has 616. Since Greek used letters to also stand for numerals, numerals have a line over the top.

The 4th c. Greek manuscript known as Codex Vaticanus (because it is owned by the Vatican) is widely considered to be the most important of all the early manuscripts of the Christian Bible. In the 19th c., a facsimile edition was printed to give scholars access to the contents of this unique and fragile book.

Former Muslim Walid Shoebat says that when he saw the symbols for 666 in the Codex Vaticanus, he saw “In the name of Allah” written in Arabic beside the crossed swords of Islam.  [See the video posted @ https://polination.wordpress.com/2014/05/18/more-insight-into-the-mark-of-the-beast/.%5D

666 and Bismallah

As I noted in my May 18, 2014 blog, I think the Holy Spirit provided all three interpretations for our benefit. In other words, it’s not 616 or 666 or In the name of Allah. It’s all three.

I’ve been writing a lot lately about the 616 and 666 angle. I doubt I’ll ever have much to say about Islam, since I know next to nothing about it. But I did see one interesting possibility in Shoebat’s interpretation.

A year ago, I wrote about why I believe the “Millennium” refers to the Age of the Gentiles, from the death of Jesus until the beginning of the final Week of the Jews. I explained my reasoning @ https://polination.wordpress.com/2013/05/01/why-i-think-the-millennium-is-now/.

There was one passage in Revelation that (as I noted) did not fit with my interpretation:

Revelation 20:4 “I saw the souls of those … who had not worshiped the beast or its image nor had accepted its mark on their foreheads or hands. They came to life and they reigned with Christ for a thousand years.”

If accepting the mark of the beast on forehead or hand is strictly a final Week of the Jews thing, then my “Millennium is now” interpretation has a real problem. However, if Shoebat is correct that one meaning for the beast’s mark is this Muslim thing … well, that’s been around for more than a thousand years, which neatly does away with my little problem.

Did the Holy Spirit drop the ball with 666 and 616?

Of course not! Obviously, God allowed the 666 and 616 translations to proliferate AND provided Shoebat to interpret the original symbols in the original text, because they ALL mean something. Shoebat even says God is not into mysteries.

I was thinking about this just last night, because that gematria stuff always confuses the heck out of me and I couldn’t wrap my mind around the idea that God, who wants us to WATCH and be READY, would make the signs too esoteric for ordinary folks to discern.
