Note: I thought it would be easier to discuss these numbers if 616 and 666 had distinct names, so I assigned the “Seal of Satan” to 666 because it’s related to the Seal of God and “Mark of the Beast” to 616 because it depicts Satan and his two End Times henchmen.

Revelation 13:11-18 says all people will be required to worship the image of the beast and to accept “a stamped image on their right hands or their foreheads, so that no one could buy or sell except one who had the stamped image of the beast’s name or the number that stood for its name. Wisdom is needed here; one who understands can calculate the number of the beast, for it is a number that stands for a person. His number is six hundred and sixty-six.”

“Gematria” is an Assyro-Babylonian system of numerology later adopted by Jews which assigns numerical value to each letter of the alphabet, then looks for significance in the sums. Adding all the numerical values of the letters in a person’s name produces a number that stands for the person. Simple English gematria assigns A = 1, B = 2, and so on. Spaces = 0. In this system, Chrissy the Hyphenated = 240. I found a gematria calculator on-line @ http://www.gematrix.org/?word=what%20is%20gematria that gave 1424 and 1400 as solutions for Chrissy the Hyphenated, but I have no idea why. Many possible combinations of letters will add up to 666. There’s even a list of possibles @ http://www.gematrix.org/?word=666. They include “Thomas Cruise” and “Star Spangled Banner.”

Some of the oldest manuscript fragments of Revelation 13 say 616 rather than 666. Some scholars favor one; some say it’s the other. Personally, I think it’s both.

Shabbat HaChodesh will begin at sundown the day of the solar eclipse. The readings for the day include Exodus 12:1-20 and Ezekiel 45:16-46:18.

• The Exodus reading is about the first Passover in Egypt when the Jews put lamb’s blood on their doorposts and lintels so that no plague would strike them when God smote the land of Egypt.
• The Ezekiel reading includes this line: “The prince shall provide the sin offerings, the meal offerings, the burnt offerings, and the offerings of well-being, to make expiation for the House of Israel.” Ezekiel 45:17

Two weeks after the solar eclipse:

1. Good Friday will fall on Preparation Day,
2. The third Blood Moon will fall on the first day of Passover, and
3. Easter Sunday will fall on the Feast of Firstfruits.

John 19 tells us it was at about NOON on Preparation Day for Passover when Pilate handed Jesus over to be crucified. This was also the hour at which the priests began to slaughter Passover lambs in the temple. I found a nifty app on-line that did a time zone conversion for me and I noticed an odd little factoid. The solar eclipse will occur at the same time!

Weird, huh?!

What is to stop others from thinking the same way?  Why shouldn’t (Chinese President) Xi Jinping think the same way regarding the claim of another air defense identification zone (ADIZ)?  Or why shouldn’t (North Korean leader) Kim Jong-un feel that a fait accompli action in the West Sea would work to his advantage?

In the 7th chapter of Daniel is recorded a prophetic dream that begins:

1 In the first year of King Belshazzar of Babylon, as Daniel lay in bed he had a dream, visions in his head. Then he wrote down the dream; the account began:

2 In the vision I saw during the night, suddenly the four winds of heaven stirred up the great sea, 3 from which emerged four immense beasts, each different from the others.

4 The first was like a lion, but with eagle’s wings. While I watched, the wings were plucked; it was raised from the ground to stand on two feet like a human being, and given a human mind.

5 The second beast was like a bear; it was raised up on one side, and among the teeth in its mouth were three tusks. It was given the order, “Arise, devour much flesh.”

6 After this I looked and saw another beast, like a leopard; on its back were four wings like those of a bird, and it had four heads. To this beast dominion was given.

7 After this, in the visions of the night I saw a fourth beast, terrifying, horrible, and of extraordinary strength; it had great iron teeth with which it devoured and crushed, and it trampled with its feet what was left. It differed from the beasts that preceded it. It had ten horns.

The beasts are generally interpreted as being successive, pre-Christian empires, though some variation exists.*  My preference is for this interpretation:

• Winged lion = Babylonian Empire < Daniel’s dream occurred during the first year of the reign of the last Babylonian king, Belshazzar.
• Bear = Persian Empire < Under Cyrus the Great, Persia rose up and conquered the other three big powers in the area at that time — Babylon, Mede, and Lydia.
• Leopard = Greek Empire < Under Alexander the Great, the Greeks conquered pretty much all of the known world at an astonishing speed. After Alexander died suddenly and without an heir at the age of 33, his generals battled for power, eventually settling into four stable power blocks: the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt, the Seleucid Empire (which included Israel), the Kingdom of Pergamon in Asia Minor, and Macedon (Alexander’s original home).
• Fourth beast = Roman Empire < Where the previous three empires are still known for their tremendous contributions to civilization in a wide range of areas, the Roman Empire was and is remarkable primarily for its brutality and raw military power.

The rest of Daniel’s vision seems to be about the end of all time, not just the end of this or that empire.  It’s not a problem really, since many events and people in the Old Testament prefigure events and people in the New Testament. Jesus specifically referenced this type of interpretation (known as “typology”) when he told Nicodemus,

“Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.” (John 3:14-15).

In fact, during my studies, I have come to believe that the whole story of the Jewish and Christian peoples was shaped by God like an author shapes a great novel, with events early in the story prefiguring events later in the story.

Therefore, I’m thinking it’s fair to interpret the beasts in Daniel’s vision as not just those four empires that pre-dated Christ’s first coming, but also as four other empires that have already or will pre-date His Second Coming.

Based on this assumption, I am struck today by the coincidence of recent news concerning Russia, China and North Korea.

5 The second beast was like a bear; it was raised up on one side, and among the teeth in its mouth were three tusks.  It was given the order, “Arise, devour much flesh.”

The BEAR is a long-standing symbol for Russia.  In the original, Persia was one of the three tusks with Mede and Lydia.  Maybe Russia is the modern Persia, with China and NoKo being the other two tusks.

 *Footnotes in the Catholic translation — New American Bible Revised Edition http://www.usccb.org/bible/ — identify Daniel’s four beasts as the Babylonian, Median, Persian, and Greek, then pegs the Revelation beast for Rome.  I don’t think this works as well as what I wrote about above.  For one thing, the Babylonian and Median were simultaneous, not sequential, which the beasts in Daniel seem to be.  Also, the animals seem to fit better with Babylon, Persia, Greece and Rome.

I have found a passage in Genesis that may add another layer of respectability to my oft-repeated theory that the seven Letters and seven Seals in John’s Revelation vision are parallel descriptions of salvation history from Jesus to the end of the Age of the Gentiles and the seven Trumpets and seven Bowls are parallel descriptions of the last seven years (aka, the last Week of the Jews).

Pharaoh then said to Joseph: “I had a dream but there was no one to interpret it. But I hear it said of you, ‘If he hears a dream he can interpret it.’”

“It is not I,” Joseph replied to Pharaoh, “but God who will respond for the well-being of Pharaoh.”

Then Pharaoh said to Joseph: “In my dream, I was standing on the bank of the Nile, when up from the Nile came seven cows, fat and well-formed; they grazed in the reed grass. Behind them came seven other cows, scrawny, most ill-formed and gaunt. Never have I seen such bad specimens as these in all the land of Egypt! The gaunt, bad cows devoured the first seven fat cows. But when they had consumed them, no one could tell that they had done so, because they looked as bad as before. Then I woke up.

“In another dream I saw seven ears of grain, full and healthy, growing on a single stalk. Behind them sprouted seven ears of grain, shriveled and thin and scorched by the east wind; and the seven thin ears swallowed up the seven healthy ears. I have spoken to the magicians, but there is no one to explain it to me.”

Joseph said to Pharaoh: “Pharaoh’s dreams have the same meaning. God has made known to Pharaoh what he is about to do. The seven healthy cows are seven years, and the seven healthy ears are seven years—the same in each dream. The seven thin, bad cows that came up after them are seven years, as are the seven thin ears scorched by the east wind; they are seven years of famine.

“Things are just as I told Pharaoh: God has revealed to Pharaoh what he is about to do. Seven years of great abundance are now coming throughout the land of Egypt; but seven years of famine will rise up after them, when all the abundance will be forgotten in the land of Egypt. When the famine has exhausted the land, no trace of the abundance will be found in the land because of the famine that follows it, for it will be very severe.

“That Pharaoh had the same dream twice means that the matter has been confirmed by God and that God will soon bring it about.”
