Mama Buzz signing on…

Update from Chrissy the Hyphenated:

CtH is my mom.  I know some of you have been missing her.  February was filled with vomiting and diarrhea; thus no blogging from CtH.  We are happy she seems to be on the mend.  But, 21 days of no food and being flat on her back has left a lot of recuperation to do and she is still too weak to sit at her computer.  Although, she reports to me by phone that her progress with her new walker is spectacular!

From 5000 miles away, I am unable to verify her wild claims to progress of feet per day with her walker, but we know she’s so honest, don’t we?!

Long point short…

CtH is ALIVE!!!

We talk on the phone often and she will update through me until her “alleged” walker progress gets to her office and she can blog directly 🙂

My dad, known here as Dearest, is a saint.  That is all.

Twenty-One Years

February 25, 1995, a pretty woman, in a fit of madness and heavily sedated, became my lawful wedded wife. Ours has been an amazing relationship in that we’ve never had a serious fight or even a heated argument. It was not the first rodeo for either of us and we were at a time in our lives when it was just time to be with each other. We knew relationships were no 50-50; they’re 100-100 every single day. It seemed we were finishing each others sentences in a very short time, and almost instinctively know what the other is thinking. She raised a son and daughter with almost no help from their father and I consider them every bit my children as I do my two daughters. Through good times and bad we always support each other. My fervent hope is that I’m taken before she is. She’s not young, thin or rich. But she treats me like a king (except when I go off on politics) and I could not imagine ever living without her.

She came to family breakfast with us today and it was the biggest crowd ever. My cousin Pam, her daughter Carrie, cousin Trish, her sonNick, her BF, my Uncle Bob, their dad, and my precious Uncle Roger. Cousin Scott’s memorial is Saturday and we all shared stories of him from long ago happy years.

Scott David Nordstrom
January 28, 1958 ~ February 16, 2016 (age 58)
Scott David Nordstrom, 58, of Rockford passed away peacefully to eternal life on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 in Swedish American Hospital with his loving family by his side. Scott was born on January 28, 1958, the son of Robert Nordstrom and Gloria (Bird) Nordstrom. He attended Auburn High School and served two years in the U. S. Army from 1976 – 1978 training as an electrician. He held various jobs in maintenance and as a machinist. Scott enjoyed reading, watching old tv shows, telling jokes and stories, listening to music, going to Bible study at Calvary Christian Church with his sister Trish, as well as spending time with family and friends. Scott was a kind, caring, and loving man with a great sense of humor who will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his father, Robert (Jan) Nordstrom; sisters and step sisters, Pamela (Erich) Schulze, Patricia Weyl, Sheila (Tom) Klonicki, Peggy (Rick) Seeling, Teresa Moberg; two nieces, Carrie Morris, Jodi Weyl; three nephews, Andrew Heaslip, Joshua Poulton, Nicholas Weyl; four great nieces; and two great nephews. The family extends a sincere thanks to Dr. Sankineni and all of the assisting caring staff in Swedish American Hospital CCU.

Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 27, 2016 in Calvary Christian Church, 5455 Charles Street, Rockford with Pastor Steve Doyle officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers memorials to the family.

My uncle asked me to give the eulogy Saturday because he said I had a way with words. Usually I do, but there are times when the words come hard. He struggled most of his adult life and battle demons we cannot imagine. Maybe he’s finally found the peace that eluded him for so long. Rest easy, Scott.

Running in Place

First, a thank you to Jane and Grunt. They actually have something to say when they come by. If I read the stats right our visits on this website are down dramatically. The main reason is our star quarterback Chrissy is still on the bench. I do the best I can, but I don’t have much to work with. Undaunted, I’m still trying. Who knows? I may stumble into something profound at some point. It could happen.

For the first time in modern history, a sitting president will not attend the funeral of a Supreme Court justice. When William Rehnquist passed, George W. Bush not only attended, he gave the eulogy. The difference between a man with class and a boorish asshole is stark. Who knows? Maybe Barry will break 100 on the links today.

It’s Not Supposed To Be Like This

Every Thursday is breakfast with my family day. My Uncle Bob, his daughter Trish, and my dear Uncle Roger. Today was very eerie. My cousin Scott, Bob’s only son, died Tuesday from liver failure. Scott was 61 and battled the demons of drugs and alcohol his entire adult life. He lived on the street after being taken in by several relatives including my grandmother and mom. He stole jewelry, old coins, anything he could sell to get drugs. The 8th of next month is the 3rd anniversary of my quitting smoking cold turkey after a two-pack-a-day habit for 40 years. I know how stressful it was trying to quit. I was lucky. When I decided I’d rather live to see my grandchildren grow up there were no withdrawal symptoms whatever and I haven’t had a craving since. It still amazes my doctor how I did it. It’s unimaginable what a horrible curse drugs are to the body and how they ruin people’s lives. They’ll do anything to score their dope. Rob, steal, prostitute themselves. The drugs have no conscience and no mercy.

The memorial for Scott is next Saturday. I’ll see some of the family for the first time since my cousin Bruce lost his son in a car wreck. When granny was suffering from dementia, she told me in a moment of clarity that it’s a terrible thing to bury a child. She lost my Uncle Ron and my mom earlier. You are supposed to pass at an old age, children and grandchildren around your bed. It’s not supposed to be like this.

John 14:1-4 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. And you know the way to where I am going.”

2 Corinthians 5:6-8 So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.

I pray that my cousin has finally found the peace he sought for so long.

MY CHILDHOOD HEROES

The images on the screen were in black and white. The sponsors were cars, cleaning products, and hair cream. There was no nudity, no sex, and no profanity. The good guy always won in the end and there was never any doubt the heroes were all man. We kids had control of the television from after school, after chores were done, until supper and for a few hours of Saturday morning cartoons. We were stuck watching whatever dad or mom wanted to watch otherwise. There were three channels and one TV set. The rotary telephone was on a party line and you waited until after 7PM when the rates were cheaper. Granny’s kitchen appliances included a refrigerator, a stove, and a Sunbeam mixer. What she could create with them was nothing short of magical. You did your homework, your folks paid the bills and saw that you were safe and well-cared for. Dad never said ‘I love you’, but you just knew. You were taught to respect your elders, you watched TV together, ate together, and prayed together. I wish more of us still did.

THERE HAVE BEEN TARZAN MOVIES MADE SINCE THE SILENT ERA. OLYMPIC SWIMMER JOHNNY WEISMULLER WAS THE ONE I GREW UP WITH. ‘TARZAN THE APE MAN’ CAME OUT ABOUT 1934 AND COULD NEVER BE MADE LIKE IT WAS TODAY. IT WAS SOOOO RACIST WITH ALL THE LOS ANGELES AFRICAN NATIVES SHOUTING ‘JU JU BWANA!’ AND GETTING EATEN BY CROCODILES AND LIONS.

NO ONE SHOULD HAVE EVER ATTEMPTED TO PLAY THE LONE RANGER AND TONTO AFTER CLAYTON MOORE AND JAY SILVERHEELS. NOT CLINTON SPILSBURY IN 1980 OR ARMIE HAMMER AND JOHNNY DEPP. NEVER SAW EITHER OF THEM. NEVER CARED.

I AM A STONE RIFLEMAN FREAK. IT WAS ON FROM 1958 UNTIL 1963. JOHNNY CRAWFORD AND I ARE THE SAME AGE. THIS SHOW CAN STILL BE FOUND ON MeTV AND I’VE SEEN EVERY EPISODE SO MANY TIMES I KNOW THE DIALOGUE. WHEN I WAS A KID I NEVER REALIZED WHEN HE FIRED AT ALL THE TARGETS WITH HIS WINCHESTER 44/40 IT WAS ALL SPECIAL EFFECTS. IT WAS SOMEWHAT SANCTIMONIOUS, HE RARELY KISSED A GIRL AND HIS KID WAS ALWAYS GETTING KIDNAPPED SO HE HAD TO KICK SOMEBODY’S ASS TO GET HIM BACK. I KNOW WAY MORE ABOUT THIS SHOW THAN A GROWN MAN SHOULD ADMIT TO.

Counting my blessings

If you took all 7.3 billion people on the planet and lined them up according to material wealth, you would find the following representative of the global middle class:

  • A family of four living in two rooms totaling about 200 square feet.
  • Plumbing (a sink, toilet, and bathing room) is out back and shared with the family next door.
  • They eat enough, although not extravagantly, and can afford some medical care, if they are frugal.
  • They probably have a few luxuries like a TV, a fridge, a gas cook top, and/or cell phones.
  • They need to work very hard to maintain what they have; if they fall behind they don’t have a big cushion.

Global middle class sink

Two to three billion people on the planet would consider any of the above to be a magnificent improvement over their current circumstances.

Back in the early 80s, my brother taught at Beijing University for a year. The government quartered him, his wife, and their 5-year-old in an apartment building for foreigners. Their apartment was similar to the one I had in college, with a living/dining area, plus one small bedroom, a small kitchen, and a bathroom.

One time and one time only*, a man my brother became close to at work came over for a visit. When he entered their apartment, his mouth dropped open and he stammered, “This is like where the Party leaders live!”

He and his wife and their one permitted child* were assigned a single room in which to live. They shared a bathroom, sink, and small stove with the other families on their floor. This man was a professor at the university.

My brother was a professor here at home. He and his wife owned their home, which had 3 bedrooms, 2-1/2 baths, a large living room, a separate dining room, a spacious eat-in kitchen, a 2-car garage, and about 1/3 acre of yard and garden all around.

*He asked not to be invited again, because fraternizing with a foreigner would put him and his loved ones at risk with the government.

**One of the people living on the floor was responsible for keeping track of the women’s menstrual cycles and reporting on any mother who was late. The government then sent someone to take her down to a clinic for an abortion.

JUST A FEW WORDS

You may have been wondering (but probably not) why there wasn’t a Christmas post with some of my favorite music videos, as has been my wont for the last four years. Sometime between when I left for work last Wednesday and when I got home the video component of the Univac machine lapsed into a coma and the screen would not light up. I have confessed numerous times that I’m a total incompetent when it comes to all things electronic-related. For three days the black screen just stared, mocking my pain. The internet is my only connection to world events and I seemed to have been as addicted to it as many are to their stupid cell phones.

Friday a co-worker brought me a spare monitor he had and after a beautiful Christmas dinner I pressed my stepson into service connecting it to my erstwhile unit. Nothing happened. So he reconnected my old monitor and lo and behold, it started working. He fiddled with the mouse and said that may have been the problem. Saturday as I dressed for work dW came in to check her Facebook page, since it’s the only thing she does to keep up with her family. After about 10 minutes it crashed. I have no clue what an AMD driver is, but they stopped working. It will happen again.

I priced new computer towers and they are extremely expensive and all now use Windows 10 as an operating system, which I want no part of. The only recourse is to get a refurbished unit with Windows 7 installed and keep it as a backup. Otherwise my life with the internet will come to an end when this machine breathes its last, since I don’t have a tech guy anymore. I managed three days without committing a felony and developed a deep appreciation for cable television. Since my illness three years ago I’ve been living on borrowed time and my relationship with the interwebs is in the same condition.
