TYLER UPDATE

The news is not good. It seems God has not finished testing our little boy and his family. I’m posting his Caring Bridge page and including the link. Your prayers are always appreciated. Tyler’s dad has him on his insurance and his treatments over the last year have run into the hundreds of thousands. The family will incur expenses for travel, meals, missed work, etc. And all this for a second Christmas in a row. I know money is tight, but if you have a couple dollars, I’m sure the family would put it to good use.

Tyler’s Story

Welcome to our CaringBridge site. We’ve created it to keep friends and family updated. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement during this time when it matters most.

Latest Journal Update

It has been quite some time since I have posted an update. Things got rough for a few weeks after Tyler finished radiation in June, but he completed treatment in August, had his port removed in October, & I honestly thought this journal would become a memory time capsule.

Unfortunately, life, & Cancer had other plans.

Tyler started experiencing pain in his left knee on Thanksgiving night. After a visit with his doctors on December 4th, & over a week of scheduled Ibuprofen & Hycet (codene & Tylenol), Tyler’s pain continued to worsen. Since he was already scheduled for his 3 month follow up scans, we decided to push them up to this past Thursday, & add on more tests, to try & find out what was happening.

After 3 straight days of scans, we now know what has been causing Tyler’s pain, & it’s not the news we wanted to hear. Tyler’s cancer is back, & is believed to have spread. He has a tumor in his back from the L-1 vertebrae, down through the end of the sacral vertebrae, & it has wrapped around his spine, encasing the nerves. The largest part is at the base of the sacral, below the spine. He also has a lesion on his T-3 vertebrae, & a spot on his brain, though they do not know if the spot on his brain is cancerous or just a blood vessel. The primary concern is the tumor in his back. He will have a port placed again tomorrow, & will begin chemo tomorrow as well. We are meeting with his radiologist on Tuesday, & he will start radiation as soon as possible. His treatment schedule will be outpatient, 5 day cycles, every 3 weeks, for a year. The biggest priority right now is to stop the tumor from growing any further. Besides the knee pain, he has not shown any neurological effects. In fact, neither his oncologist or neurosurgeons could explain why the pain presented in his knee. I believe that it was God’s intervention, as you can not see the tumor from the outside, & it could have been much worse had it been discovered any later.

To say that we are devastated would be a gross understatement. It has felt like a recurring bad dream, since it was exactly a year ago that he was first diagnosed. We are going to tell Tyler tomorrow morning, & he will likely be in the hospital through the week while we get a handle on everything. He is the strongest, bravest boy, who shouldn’t have to go through this. With God’s grace, & a lot of prayer, love, & support, I believe that he can beat this. It’s going to be a long road, but we are going to do everything we can to help Tyler beat cancer for the second time.

Thank you for all of your love & prayers, & please keep them coming.

MAKES MY OWN LITTLE PROBLEMS SEEM PIDDLING. HE’S ONLY SEVEN YEARS OLD.

Okay is not good enough for God

This week, Dearest replaced an old, dim, buzzing fluorescent light over the sink with a bright, white LED one that is blessedly silent. The up side is obviously that there’s no hum and the light is bright enough at the sink now that I can see clearly. The down side is that I discovered the sink area was not actually clean. Ahem.

2015_12 05 D put in new kit light

I had a little spiritual ah ha moment from the Lord during my Bible time today on this topic. Two of the readings mentioned light … Jesus is the light of the world and God shines His light into the darkness and reveals hidden truths.

My kitchen light revealing subtle splashes and schmutz I hadn’t been able to see before reminded me of St Teresa of Avila’s thing about spiritual growth being like gardening. She said that, first, God goes in with us and starts ripping out the ginormous weeds. When that’s done, He wants us to tackle all the middle sized weeds we couldn’t see before. When those are gone, He wants us to get down and really dig into our consciences to get at those small and hidden things that lurk like bits of crab grass root.

I’ve noticed that the more a person works at being truly holy, the more humble they seem to become. I think I get now why that is. 🙂

SOME TURKEY DAY SMILES

Thanksgiving is far and away the heaviest day in the newspaper delivery business. It is an ode to our unexpurgated greed, as we give thanks for our blessings just before we push and shove to get an iPad that’s on sale for cheap. The Chicago Tribunes I deliver will have about 1200 pages, including the news and the sale ads. This will be my fourth year and I still dread it. To top it off, I started coming down sick Monday and it’s gotten progressively worse. There is every possibility DW will make the trek to her daughter’s house for the holiday while I dine on chicken soup. I’ll just have my turkey and stuffing when I no longer feel like 10 pounds of Durbin in a one pound bag.

I’m posting a couple seasonal images. I can do at least that much without messing it up.

THE BEAT GOES ON

It hardly seems Thanksgiving is a mere week away. This is the second year SD has had dinner at her house, since it’s bigger than our apartment. I was used to DW gathering all the things to make the meal and constantly griping about having to do this every year. She’d never admit when she has a houseful of children and grandchildren she’s in her glory.

It’s at this time of year I miss Granny the most. I have such vivid memories of helping her break up the stale bread for her stuffing, pitting the grapes for her fruit salad, and watching her make the crusts for all the pies she baked. We’d come in from doing chores and the whole house was filled with smells that seemed a lot like Heaven to us kids.

It’s also distracting to see the utter failure of a president who will not accept reality nor respect the laws of civilized people. Last night he mocked republicans as being afraid of migrant women and children. It is painfully obvious he hates republicans worse than terrorists. Even some in the media are waking up… belatedly… at what they allowed him to become. Not that they’re sorry, of course. Feeling guilt requires a conscience. Rather than post them in the header I’ll put everything in the reply section and post some things that I haven’t had a chance to in awhile.

To Be Called a Veteran

A veteran I know emailed me the link to the article below.  It made me tear up with pride in and love for our veterans, so I just had to share it here in its entirety.  The original source is linked at the bottom.

Soldier with angel shadow

I have a friend named Cal. He is quick to smile, and quite dashing, even at 80. He’s one of those people that even after just one conversation you think, what an amazing person – I am so glad I met him! He just retired from his third career. He loves his God, he loves his wife and he loves his country – and all of this is evident in all that he does.

The funny thing about a lot of older veterans is that despite their fierce pride in the military and the men and women they served with, you might never know they are veterans. A very humble group of people – not quick to toot their own horn.

Cal’s first retirement was from the Army as a Chief Warrant Officer 3, after serving multiple tours in Vietnam.

One night, after eating dinner, my husband and I got to share our own deployment stories with him and his wife. As it turned out, a lot of the things we remembered about our own deployments were pretty much the same, whether fighting in Vietnam or Iraq. Cal’s only response was “Sometimes, it’s good to talk to Army folk.”

And he is right. It is good to talk to Army folk. It’s good to talk to people who have gone through something that no one really gets unless they have done it themselves – it’s what truly makes us brothers and sisters in arms.

My Uncle Terry is also a Vietnam veteran, he was a platoon leader and after only a few months in country, he was shot. Apparently, he almost died leading from the front and protecting his men. The doctors said that there was no logical explanation for him surviving- a real miracle.  The Marines awarded him the Silver Star. But all Uncle Terry ever told me was that being a Platoon Leader was the best job he ever had.

Then there is our friend Jack and his buddy Ed. I ate dinner with Jack and Ed the day Jack’s son, my husband’s best friend, was posthumously presented with the Distinguished Service Cross for tackling a suicide bomber and saving the lives of all of his Soldiers.

I had the greatest time talking to Ed. He kept asking me questions about my time in the Army, and it never occurred to me to ask him much about himself. I found out later, Ed Freeman was a Medal of Honor recipient made famous in the movie “We Were Soldiers.”

Ed and Jack flew together in Vietnam. On the same day that Ed disobeyed a direct order and flew into the battle of Ia Drang Valley, saving the lives of many Soldiers, Jack was on a mission elsewhere in the country.

Not a word about this from either of them – both so humble.

People like Cal, Uncle Terry, Jack and Ed are who I think of when I think of Veterans. These are some of the best men I have ever known. They served their God, their family and their country with love in their hearts and no complaints. And when they think back on their military service – they remember fondly the phenomenal men and women they served alongside.

I’m not sure I will ever deserve to be lumped into the same category as them when my military career winds down, but I hope that our next generation of veterans will be able to look at me and say I lived up to this standard. If they do, then maybe I will have earned the title veteran.

THE DONALD DOES SNL

This is being posted today because I may not be able to post tomorrow. My loving wife has had her faith tested today. Her older sister is in the hospital, and has refused to be put on life support. DW just came back from her father, who is 96 and is now facing the loss of his second child.

Piled on top of that, DW went to WalMart today. She loaded her purchases in the car and got to the end of the parking lot when she realized she’d left her purse in the cart. There was a shiny-faced young aspiring rapper named Dindu Nuffin gathering carts as she was getting ready to leave. When she got back minutes later, her purse was gone and so was Dindu. She reported it to store security, who saw her loading the car on the surveillance camera but claimed they didn’t see him take it. They didn’t dare ask to look in his car, he’d have sued them because that’s what they do. She only had about $20, her driver’s license, insurance cards and her cell phone, which is worth nothing to a pawn shop because it’s a flip phone.

When she got home, everything was just too much for her. We hugged and then we prayed together. She called the bank and cancelled her bank card right away. We can’t get her a duplicate driver’s license since all the state offices are closed on Monday. She still has her old phone, so we’re going to the store to see if they can reactivate it. She has to get a new Medicare card and a new Humana card. But all her doctors have her information anyway. It’s not the money, it’s just the feeling of violation when someone knowingly steals from you. In the end, I’m sure he will answer for what he’s done. Maybe it was providence that she went shopping alone. Had this happened when I was with her I most likely would have been arrested for my extreme racist rants. I just don’t suffer in silence well.

OK, SO DONALD DID SNL LAST NIGHT.

‘SNL’ Recap: We’ve Been Trumped
THIS ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY ETHAN ALTER. I’D BET MONEY HE’S LEFTIST HACK JONATHON ALTER’S KID.
“Why are you hosting Saturday Night Live? Why?” It turns out the answer is pretty simple. “I really have nothing better to do,” Trump admitted.

Of course, Trump was just kidding around. (We think.) The real reason he’s hosting SNL is to show that he can take a joke. Heck, he can take all the jokes the show has thrown at him over the years. (Actually, the real real reason is for all the free attention and exposure, but that’s obvious enough to not require explanation.) “I don’t hold grudges against anybody,” he insisted, pointing out that he’s even gotten over his feud with Rosie O’Donnell…although she probably shouldn’t expect a dinner party invite anytime soon, since he can’t tell the difference between the real O’Donnell and SNL cast member Aidy Bryant.

AY CARAMBA! #BoycottFail Trump Delivers SNL Highest Ratings in 4 YEARS!
With Donald Trump hosting, Saturday Night Live jumped to its biggest overnight rating since 2012.

According to NBC, SNL had a whopping 6.6 household rating on Saturday night, easily beating the season’s previous high: the 41st season premiere last month, hosted by Miley Cyrus and with a guest appearance by none other than … Hillary Clinton. In fact, Trump’s overnight rating was 47 percent higher than the Miley/Hillary episode.

The previous high was held by an episode that aired Jan. 7, 2012, hosted by Charles Barkley with musical guest Kelly Clarkson.

THAT REMINDS ME

CtH did a post on FB about her daughter parenting little Buzz. They got him a beanbag game for his birthday. I got to thinking I haven’t posted any vintage stuff for awhile.

It’s a shame kids today are too preoccupied with their iPhones and video games to get outside and play with some of these toys. To my knowledge, we got a few bumps and bruises but nobody died.

Their back yard was really steep and it had a pass through some trees into another field below that, so the run was long and FAST and it went through a tree tunnel which, since Flying Saucers don’t steer worth a darn, was really adrenaline making! LOL  Plus, the neighbor’s house had a patio with a brick grill on the outer corner. They built the snow run up to the top of the grill, so the start was ON the grill and the first part of the hill was REALLY step, then they put in some banks, then through the trees, then level off and crash land into a snow bank.  Whoosh!! – CtH]

SO HOW’S YOUR WEEK GOING?

When you first enroll in Medicare you are entitled to something called Medicare Initial Preventative Physical Examination. I visited my family doctor Tuesday and went over the checklist of services offered initially. I skipped the colonoscopy because a fecal occult blood test and a Barium enema didn’t really appeal to me. At breakfast this morning both my uncles have had one. One was put under anesthetic, but Uncle Roger watched the whole thing and proceeded to describe it… in detail… over a ham and cheese omelet.

The doctor also gave me a flu shot, which I hadn’t had in over 20 years. I woke up yesterday morning with chills and all-over body ache. I know it’s purely psychosomatic, just saying’. The doctor also wanted some lab work, which I had to get done at a different hospital since they’re the only ones where the bloodwork is covered under my supplemental insurance. I fasted for over 12 hours and when I went yesterday morning to register my doctor had written in an invalid code. They just called and said they finally contacted him and corrected the error so I guess I’ll go without coffee again tomorrow morning. I get a little…uh…disagreeable without my morning coffee.

OK, so today is the much-overhyped Benghazi show starring the Butcher herself, Hillary Soulless Clinton. The media is fretting over how she’ll get out of this one. She hasn’t, in reality, a worry in the world. She has the entire Democrat party defending her and everybody knows it. As an important and influential media reporter, I have obtained an advanced copy of her testimony.

There are also the usual crimes committed by Obama’s flock, which are too numerous to go into much detail about. Canada has gone full-out Communist after this week’s election and Crazy Uncle Joe decided running for president was too much work for a pompous gasbag who’s done next to nothing in the senate for 35 years.

BIG SIS’ HOMECOMING DATE

Go ahead. Roll your eyes and keep scrolling. Most of you stop here for Chrissy’s in depth posts on matters of Faith and maybe the funny crap I post. The long and short of it is this: aside from my fishing partner I have no friends. I have always considered you as friends I’ll never meet. A very large part of my life has been wasted. The only thing I can look back at with pride are my two girls. During the most important times in their youth I was busy taking care of myself first and foremost. Now they’re grown and have children of their own and I’m trying to make up for some of the irreparable harm I did by neglecting them for so long.

After 40 years of smoking two packs of cigarettes a day my cardiologist gave me two choices: quit and enjoy your grandkids a little longer, or keep on and probably not see them graduate. Quitting cold turkey was a easy proposition. I don’t carry a lot of pictures in my wallet because there’s no one to show them to. So I do it here. Those little ones are the only reason I have to keep going.

Thank you for your patience.

A STUDY IN CONTRASTS

In the small town of Winnebago, Illinois they had a homecoming parade Wednesday. The homecoming game is tonight and the dance is tomorrow night. RJ’s big sis asked a boy to go to homecoming, although she insists it’s NOT A DATE!! Mom has ordered a boutonniere for the young casanova and she’s getting a corsage. They’re going to a Japanese restaurant in Rockford for dinner along with, she thought, his parents. My daughter informed her that she and her stepdad will also be along as chaperones. She’s a wonderful kid and I couldn’t ask for a better granddaughter but responsible parents like she has (and I had) don’t buy the “boys will be boys” and “might as well give them condoms because they’re going to do it anyway” horses hit. One day they will look back and be thankful they had parents who loved and protected them, even the times they were sure mom and dad just didn’t understand because they were never young.

Obama: Never Letting a Good Mass Shooting Go To Waste

In his televised temper tantrum, Obama scolded those opposed to a crackdown on firearms ownership, including people who say the nation needs “more guns” to prevent such mass shootings. He implored those who would gut Second Amendment protections to vote for political candidates who share their visceral contempt for a constitutionally-guaranteed right.

“Each time this happens I’m going to bring this up,” Obama said. “Each time this happens I am going to say we can actually do something about it.”

Obama’s twelve-and-a-half minute oration was the fifteenth time the president has issued a statement on a mass shooting, CBS Radio reporter Mark Knoller wrote on Twitter.

SAME OLD SAME OLD

THIS MAY OR MAY NOT COME AS A COMPLETE SURPRISE TO YOU:
In 12 Minute Speech to America About Mass Shooting, Obama Refers to Himself 28 Times

During today’s 12-minute address, President Obama referred to himself 28 times. (For those counting at home, that’s almost three times per minute.)

Note that in arriving at this calculation, we included mentions of “we” when he was clearly including himself as part of the plural pronoun; the many uses of “we” in referring to America at large were not included.
