WHAT’S REALLY IMPORTANT

The fascinating thing about my regular Thursday breakfast with my kin is you’re never quite sure who will show up. This morning it was me, Uncle Bob, Uncle Roger, my cousin Trish, and my cousin Pam’s daughter, Carrie, who I haven’t seen since she was a little girl. She’s 32 and has two children. She works at a mega-church thrift store in town. We spent more than an hour eating and being peppered with questions from Carrie about the family history. There is a chalk portrait in her mother’s home she never realized was of her mother, Pam, done by my mom. She seemed enthralled by all the things she never knew and I look forward to seeing her again. I consider it of utmost importance to pass on the history of the family so when we pass on the history of who we are and where we came from can live on.

The world is a cold, hard place, unfeeling and uncaring. Many days I don’t even check what’s going on because everything seems to be wrong. It’s at a point where nothing matters much anymore outside of my faith and my family. I will still post the usual stuff as the spirit moves. God bless you all.

Mascot Update: Calendar Cuties

Mama Buzz made us this calendar for Christmas last year.  I’m a little sad about having to turn this page over to October tomorrow morning.  It’s been such a joy to see it all month!

2015_09 30 Last day for this page sad

LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY

It was early September in the year of Our Lord, 1969. An American had just walked on the moon and the Chicago Cubs had led the National League virtually since opening day. There had been a summer-long party in the Windy City. The slide began in mid-August and never stopped until the Cubs relinquished first place to the New York Mets, who went on a tear in September to something like a 25-3 record.

The day the Cubs slipped into second place I remember my grandfather coming through the kitchen door, his face flush with dejection. His voice fairly trembled with the bitterness of unfulfilled dreams as he spoke the words I’ve never forgotten: “THEY WOULDN’T BE THE CUBS IF THEY DIDN’T BREAK YOUR HEART.”

Saturday the Cubs clinched their first playoff berth since 2008 by virtue of the team behind them losing. The players and the fans celebrated heartily, the fact they’d just lost a game to the Pittsburgh Pirates, the team they will face next week in a one-game playoff. The winner goes on to face St. Louis, the loser packs his bags and heads home until spring training.

As most of you know, Chicago’s 5-year rebuilding plan is in its 107th year. They haven’t been in a World Series since 1945, a year when most teams still had their best players fighting World War II. There is not another athletic team, amateur or professional, who is on the same planet as far as futility. I am convinced the Cubs will never win another championship, at least in my lifetime. It’s one of those inexplicable phenomena like the blue whale, the largest mammal on earth, reaching lengths in excess of 70 feet, has a windpipe approximately the circumference of a half dollar…. that’s just the way it is.

I enjoy watching my professional hometown sports teams, but I don’t get too involved in the euphoric highs and cavernous lows of hardcore fans. I save my unbridled and unabashed enthusiasm for my grandchildrens’ teams. Win or lose, they are winners to me.

Bring on October: Cubs ready to handle the playoff pressure
As the Cubs popped champagne bottles and crushed beer cans, Jason Motte looked at Kyle Schwarber and said: “This is way better than college!”

The mosh pits formed outside the home dugout after Saturday afternoon’s 4-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field. The Cubs had already clinched their playoff spot before the game – thanks to the San Francisco Giants losing on Friday night on the West Coast – but there was no way this group would turn down the chance to party.

Playoff-bound Chicago Cubs ready for 1st trip since 2008
Cubs manager Joe Maddon was watching the movie “Jersey Boys,” doing all he could not to check his iPad Friday night until about the final scene.
He saw that San Francisco was losing to Oakland in the ninth. When the Athletics closed out the victory, it clinched it for the Cubs. Chicago was headed to the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

Most importantly, Miss Olivia wasn’t feeling well, so dad brought her to stay with grandma and papa. She’s watching some Tom and Jerry cartoons on dvd, we played the tickle game and grandma is fixing her spaghetti-os for lunch. Afterward she’ll curl up, as she always does, next to her grandma. It’s always been her safe place. That’s something we all need, no matter how old we are.
In the midst of everything we have to deal with as adults there’s nothing like an ailing 8 year old to keep things in perspective.

MONDAY MORNING MUSINGS

and other alliterations.

Stopped at Meier this morning. Was a little sad as I passed the Halloween candy display. They had those peanut butter thingys in the orange and black wrappers. I used to eat them by the bag. I now have type II diabetes. Can’t have them anymore.

Also bought a 5# bag of russet potatoes. Sign said $1.19. Got home and looked at the receipt. I picked up the wrong taters. These were organic potatoes. $4.49/bag. I’ll be taking them back tomorrow while I’m on my route.

Took DW to our granddaughter’s softball game yesterday then to Steak and Shake for lunch. They’re featuring a caramel apple shake for the season. DW made a face I’ve rarely seen since our wedding night.

Coming back from WalMart a little while ago we ended up behind a black Corvette driven by a geezer about 75 years old. He was doing 30MPH. I wasn’t aware Corvettes went that slow.

Yesterday was Rosh Hashana. I’ve been looking to find the article about the celebration Obama surely held at the White House for all his Jewish friends. He DID, didn’t he? He’s never missed a muslim holiday…ever.

I’ve seen a few articles about European countries realizing what they’re doing and cutting off the flood of Syrian “refugees.” 75% of them are military age cowards too afraid to fight for their country but they want to screw up somebody else’s.

LET’S LIGHT THIS CANDLE

SUMMER’S LAST HURRAH

Hope everybody had a great holiday weekend. The rain held off until this morning and we took full advantage of the warm weather. Saturday we made the journey to RJ’s football game. I just never get tired of seeing the kids play. It’s one of the few joyful things left to me.

PHOTOS ARE COURTESY OF RJ’s UNCLE, WHO IS A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER.

WE’RE ON THE SIDELINE, DW IS SEATED BEHIND THE MAN IN THE WHITE SHIRT, I’M HIDING NEXT TO HER

GO, ETHAN!

THE BEAUTIFUL THING IS HOW MUCH SUPPORT THESE KIDS GET FROM THEIR FAMILIES

THIS IS PEYTON. SHE LOVES CHEERING ON HER STEPBROTHER.

AFTER THE GAME WE STOPPED AT A VEGETABLE STAND IN THE COUNTRY FOR SOME FRESH PRODUCE. WE GOT SOME TOMATOES, SWEET CORN, FRESH GREEN BEANS AND SOME YUMMY PEACHES. WE GRILLED HAMBURGERS FOR THE LAST TIME THIS SEASON.

ON MONDAY MY YOUNGEST DAUGHTER AND HER BESTEST BUDDY, TYLER, MARCHED IN THE LABOR DAY PARADE FOR THE K CANCER BASEBALL TEAM

AS MY DAYS DWINDLE TO A PRECIOUS FEW MY PRIORITIES HAVE CHANGED TO FINDING PEACE AND JOY IN LITTLE THINGS MANY MAY OVERLOOK. GOD CONSTANTLY REMINDS ME HOW TRULY BLESSED I AM.

GOD BLESS THE CABLE COMPANY

Just kidding. May they burn in hell. I got a letter from them saying we had one or more set-top boxes that had to be replaced because they were going to some different kind of crap by Oct.6. The box on my set is only a couple months old so when I checked we only needed one for DWs TV. I have always insisted that one secret to a happy marriage is two TVs at opposite ends of the house.

I had to get a different box a few months ago when I finally broke down and replaced my old SDTV with a flat screen. Fortunately my stepson knows how to connect all this stuff. We both have (wait for it) a VHS/DVD player attatched to our sets. Her VHS recorder gave up the ghost years ago so I added DVR service to hers. Best ten bucks I ever invested.

When I took my old box to the Comcast office I had to take a number. There were 19 people ahead of me. There was a young Hispanic girl doing traffic control or something. There were plenty of illegals there so my guess is she was primarily an interpreter. I axed her about getting a new box for my other set. She had no clue. She guesed I had to disconnect the old box, drive 15 miles to the south end of town, and exchange it. I assured her that wasn’t gonna happen.

I ordered the new box through the mail and it arrived UPS a couple days ago. My beloved child bride insisted that I call and make sure this box had the DVR function, since it didn’t indicate so anywhere on the unit. I called and talked to some dude in Calcutta or New Delhi or someplace who was very difficult to understand. He told me to very much find the number on the back of the box thank you so much. After I gave it to him there was a long silence. Normally what they do when they can’t to get rid of you is put you on hold and walk away for an hour. When he came back he assured me it was a DVR unit. Was there anything else he could helping me with today?

Yeah, why did my bill jump $20 this month for no reason?

Have a pleasant day, sir, and thanking you for calling Comcast.

Son is coming over at some point today to hook it up. He loves his mama. I’m betting the dothead lied to me just to get rid of me. We’ll see soon enough.

JUST FOR THE RECORD

The Lord blessed me with the most awesome tech guy EVAH!

First it was the Windows 10 fiasco. A day later a window pops up from CC Cleaner, which is already installed and says: ‘Do you want this program to make changes to your computer?’ I thought it was an upgrade. Turns out a bunch of crap was imported to the point every website I went to had a window pop up saying my PC was infected. In a state of panic, I called my guy Friday morning about 8. He called me back at 11:30 and I explained my situation. He said he’d go in and fix it. I went to lunch with Randy and by the time I got back everything was back to normal. This may not seem like a big deal to people who know computers. Understand, I’m a retard when it comes to this stuff. My guy lives 30 miles away and I’ve never met him. He does his magic through a program that allows him to link to my machine and work on it as if he were here. This allows him to run scans and do things without having to sit here.

Being partially disabled I don’t have much of a life without my PC except for delivering papers and watching my grandchildren. We have few friends and there’s not much I can do physically outside the home. This blog is a big part of what keeps me going. When the computer is not working properly I’m not fit to live with. My guy lets me pay what I can, when I can. Having a friend like that….priceless.

THE BEST TIME OF THEIR LIVES

The shining monument to greed, avarice, corruption, hypocrisy, pomposity, treachery, tyranny and sophistry still stands in our nation’s capitol. We will deal with it in the fullness of time.

As I sat last Saturday, watching my grandson and his teammates on the Winnebago Indian Junior Tackle squad do battle with the Oregon Hawks, I couldn’t help but muse how fortunate these young people were. They have the support of moms, dads, siblings, grandparents and friends. Parents pay for their uniforms and equipment, make sure they make it to practice and to games and usually some family time afterwards. All the kids have to worry about is having a good time, listening and learning from their coaches, and practicing good sportsmanship. Coming from a small town they’ve yet to be touched by racial hatred. They still have time for video games, texting and such, but they have no concerns about the burdens and responsibilities they’ll face as adults. They will never be this young, this energetic, this carefree ever again and it will be a long time before they look back and remember these days fondly. How I envy them.

DO NOT INSTALL WINDOWS TEN!

My tech guy had recommended to me to install the new Microsoft platform Windows 10. I tried several times on Thursday without success. He did it by remote Thursday evening and I finished the task early Friday morning. It took less than two nanoseconds to realize what a disaster it was. Yahoo would not install as my home page, my list of bookmarks had disappeared, there were no commands when I right clicked on my mouse (copy, past, delete, etc.) and the only game I play online (a lot) is Solitaire. It wound up in an app with hundreds of other games you could not play unless you had a Microsoft account to log in with. I frantically called my guy who finally returned my call. You can recover your old Windows within the first thirty days. After that you’re stuck. Doing a normal system restore point won’t work because it won’t allow it.

DW has been visiting her dad since Thursday morning and she’s coming home today. She knows even less than I do about computers. She checks her e-mail once in a while but basically she uses IE to check her Facebook page to keep in touch with her family, which are scattered around the country. If she had to log in every time she used it she would be very unhappy. You wouldn’t want to see her when she’s unhappy. I came back from a Friday lunch date over clam chowder with my fishing partner and my guy had my machine back to normal.
Everything is touted as “new” and “improved.” Such is not always the case.
