FRIDAY NEWS AND SILLINESS

So the original plan yesterday was to meet my cousin, her sister, and their dad,my late Aunt Gloria’s husband, for breakfast at the local restaurant we meet at. I called Uncle Roger and invited him to meet us there. Then mama broke a tooth and I missed meeting them. My cousin sent me a picture of them and a message from Roger saying “you shouldn’t have hit your wife in the mouth so hard!” I tried without success to send LOL back in a text message. So I asked the dentist’s receptionist if she could do it for me. After looking at me as if she were incredulous that a) I didn’t know how to text and b) I still used a flip phone, she did it. My cousin called soon after and said we’d get together next week. I was glad Roger made it to see them. He said he’d not talked to Bob in more than 30 years. I’m as determined as ever to get everybody together this summer. We’re all in our 60’s and have children and grandchildren. It’s important that they know where they come from now,or the opportunity will be lost forever.

I ADORE THESE TWO. ROGER IS THE ONE ON THE LEFT WITH THE SNOW WHITE HAIR. HIS WIFE STILL WORKS FULL TIME. LORD KNOWS THEY DON’T NEED THE MONEY,SHE JUST STILL LOVES TO WORK. BOB WAS AN ASSISTANT SCOUTMASTER FOR MY BOY SCOUT TROOP. ON CAMPOUTS,WE KIDS WOULD DO OUR SCOUT STUFF AND THE GROWNUPS WOULD SIT IN A TENT SMOKING CIGARS AND PLAYING CARDS (AFTER SUPPER,OF COURSE). THEY BOTH STILL LOOK DAMN GOOD FOR BEING IN THEIR 80’S.

CALL ME LAWRENCE NIGHTINGALE

DW bit into a sammich Tuesday and broke a tooth. I had to take her to the dentist this AM for surgery to extract it. When I got her home I had to run to Wally World to get the antibiotics and pain medication filled. I fixed her some jello, have some pudding and will make some soup for her dinner. She’s been resting on the couch, being waited on hand and foot. I don’t get much of a chance to spoil her,so she takes advantage of it.
Today is supposed to be the last cold day for awhile,so here’s hoping.

IT WAS TWENTY YEARS AGO TODAY

I stood before the pastor, our best friends and Almighty God and swore to my beloved child bride to love, honor, obey, and be a monumental pain in the ass for the rest of my natural life. During the course of our lifetimes we have had many acquaintances, friends and in most cases, some lovers. It took 45 years and three bad marriages to find my best friend forever. In all our years we’ve never had what you would call a really serious fight. Neither of us are wired that way. We’d both been around long enough to know the realities of marriage and knew when something was broke you fixed it,not just throw it away.

She has a daughter and son who were teenagers when we married and I look at them as my own. Her daughter (Isabel and Olivia’s mom) bonded instantly. Her son took some time and effort. He was never used to having another male in the house and he had to learn that the old bull still had enough powder in his horn to rule the roost (mixed metaphors…it’s what I do). Eventually we made peace and now I call him the son I never had.

Some people get lucky and find the right one early in life. Some don’t until their later years and some never find a true life partner ever. We’ve had some money in the bank and we’ve been down to less than nothing. We always made it somehow,I suspect, because we had each other, our family and our faith to see things through. My time on earth is growing short but I will spend whatever is left of my life with the bestest buddy I could ever find.

A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE

It’s probably just me,but I’m afraid this country will never be right again. Everything is faster, cheaper, shinier. A hundred million people living off a government check with millions more pouring across our borders to take what others have worked and sacrificed for. Two more years to agonize under Obama’s abuse then at least four years under Hillary. I will not live to see another republican president. The sight in my left eye is gone and this morning I had a severe emphysema attack in the shower. It gets harder to breathe every day. I take nebulizer treatments, but it’s just temporary. Any physical exertion leaves me gasping for air. It’s been two years since I quit smoking but the damage was done long ago. At least I can look back at my life and think: damn,I had me a time.

My so-called “white” privilege

White privilege myth

I’m a third-generation American across the board. Far from being “white privileged”, my immigrant ancestors were Irish and German laborers and English farmers who came here because there wasn’t much future for them in Europe.  And they were Catholics, which if you know anything about immigrant history meant they were discriminated against when they got here.

One of my grandfathers left home before he was 16 and spent his working life as a laborer. The other grandfather had to drop out of high school and get a job, because his father had been unemployed so long, the family was about to lose their home.

It was a big deal for that generation to get their kids through high school. My mom was the first in her family to do it. It wasn’t an easy life, especially when her dad’s business went under during the Depression. I remember my mom telling me she lied to a date about a bad light bulb on the porch, because she was ashamed to admit their electric had been turned off for non-payment.

When she graduated Valedictorian ca 1932, she got a scholarship to college. Her father refused to allow her to go, because he wanted her to get a job so she could help support the family. Her senior year, she babysat many hours to save up for a class ring. When her father found out about the money, he took it from her without any thanks or apology.

My father, the eldest of four, dropped out of high school and got a job digging ditches. One day, the ditch he was in collapsed, nearly suffocating him. The minute he was dug out, his boss demanded he start digging again. He said that was when he decided a diploma was a good idea. He went back to high school and eventually earned a Master’s degree. He and my mom were absolutely no nonsense about all 6 of us going to college. It wasn’t a “what do you want to do after high school”, but “when are we going to look at colleges” thing.

My father’s teaching salary didn’t pay enough for their large family, so my folks started a side business in the spare bedroom.  With hard work and scholarships, we six kids earned 12 degrees … 6 Bachelors, 5 Masters and a Doctorate. I’m the wastrel of the family, because I dropped out of grad school without completing my degree.

So yeah … I benefited from privilege in so far as I grew up in a stable, two-parent home where education and hard work were highly valued.  But it had more to do with my parents being devout Catholics who believed that we are all going to be accountable to God after we die than it did with the amount of melanin in our skin.

I was raised with such non-prejudice that when a neighbor remarked about my black play mate, I remember thinking she was an idiot.  I was five.  What mattered to me was whether a person was nice and fun to be with and, given our ages, lived where we didn’t have to cross the street to play together. But skin color?  Pshaw.

I asked my mom once if Catholic prejudice had ever affected them personally. She said, “Yes, there was a job your father didn’t get once because he was Catholic. But then he got the next one because he was Catholic. We didn’t worry about it.”

TALENT SHOW REVIEW AND REGULAR STUFF

Stupid machine is acting like a Malaysian Airlines jet…it keeps crashing. This probably won’t work, but I’ll give it a try.

Ever been to a grade school talent show? We went to our granddaughters’ show on Tuesday. It was actually better than I expected. It’s a pre-K through 8th grade Catholic school, so each class had a distinct uniform. The pre-k-kindergarten group sang along with a recording of the old Sunday School song, wise man/foolish man (built his house upon the sand). I’m sure they practiced doing all the gestures in unison, but one just stared off looking for his mom, and another girl who will be the class clown grinned and danced to the tune in her head. There were skits, a first-grader read jokes off her note cards, one kid did a hula hoop, one had several duck calls he demonstrated, and the biggest surprise was a boy from Miss Isabel’s fifth grade class who pulled a violin out and announced he was going to play Orange Blossom Special. I was ready to cringe, since there’s nothing as ear-splitting as someone on the violin when they don’t know how to play. Apparently he started years ago because he was really good.

Three 8thgraders were hosting the show and they gave away ‘Mary’ awards, named after the school, St. Mary’s, to teachers in appreciation. There were certificates for best musician, most helpful, athletic, most compassionate, etc. There was an award for best principal (the head honcho lady) and one for knowing the most about the Saints. The priest won that one. They even had an award for the best janitor (they only have one). One of the kids ran to get him and when he came into the auditorium the room erupted. They really love this little man.

I know this is boring, but there’s a point. The children were all quiet, patient and respectful. My stepdaughter, who I consider one of my own kids, teaches at a public school in another city but sends her kids to Catholic school, like many other teachers do. There’s a reason for that.

This video is a tragic example of what public school teachers are subjected to when faced with trying to teach violent, ignorant savages anything useful. The 62 year old teaher took away the 16 year old ninth grader’s phone and was pummeled. In my day, this would have been unthinkable. Sadly, if the man had tried to defend himself or fight back, the little darlins’ mama and her baby daddy would appear out of nowhere to sue the poor man and the school to get a chunk of money. Our educational system has been destroyed by the teachers’ unions and the democrats the unions and welfare leeches vote for perennially.

Apparently the video has been removed…use your imagination.

“It’s troubling that in our society today students think that inside a school they can put their hands on each other and teachers as well,” said Jonathan Hodges, a veteran school board member. “I went online trying to find this video and I found numerous videos of teachers being attacked by their students.”

TYLER UPDATE & SOME OTHER STUFF

From Tyler’s Caringbridge page;
‘Cautiously optimistic’ would be the appropriate term

Latest Journal Update
Official diagnosis, Back to school update, & Links on how to help

By Tyler Levine — Jan 13, 2015 12:34pm
We heard back from Tyler’s nurse practioner that the bone marrow biopsy results came back, and showed that his cancer has not spread. We were told that Tyler’s type of cancer does not have stages, & is classified by whether it is localized, or if it is metastatic. So, after the bone marrow biopsy, CT scan, and nuclear medicine/bone scan, we now know that it is localized, which is very good news, and will help when it comes to local intervention.

Tyler’s return to school yesterday went very well. The kids were all eager to hear about what’s going on with Tyler, and had lots of great questions. He managed to stay the entire day, with only needing to rest for a bit. I spoke with him last night, and he was full of energy & excited for the rest of the week. All of the staff at his school have been very supportive, and we have had several parents already reach out. Being at school, and around is friends, is better than any medicine and will definitely help as we continue treatment.

I appreciate all your prayers more than any words I could manage to convey.

THURSDAYS BITS AND PIECES

First, congratulations to BoB on the impending arrival of her first grandchild. If I knew grandchildren were so much fun I’d have tried to have them first!

It’s still below zero and there’s a snowstorm heading this way this afternoon. I look out the window and remember dealing with a cold-blooded diesel truck and shivering so badly from the cold I could barely steer the damn thing straight. Then I look out the window, sipping my coffee and contemplating taking a little nap. Retirement ain’t all that bad.

My sister sent me a five day weather forecast from her city. She lives in Phoenix. It’s going to be in the 80s every day. I hate my sister.

After more than 20 years together,I think DW likes to push my buttons on purpose. I got home this morning and poured myself a bowl of Rice Krispies for breakfast. She had put the jug back in the fridge with two teaspoons of milk left in it. A normal person would have emptied it,rinsed the container out and put it in the recycle bin and opened another gallon. I got a snap and a crackle, but there was no pop.
