In Virginia a teacher does not have to join the NEA and I don’t think it is a big factor here. Every year at budget time there is a representative from the county’s branch of the NEA to speak to a certain issue, usually teacher raises. The board members listen politely and then go on with their business. This is a pretty good county, though, and has been one of the better school systems for teacher pay and benefits (and educational outcomes, too) for many, many years. I have many friends who teach, but I don’t think many of them belong to the NEA. I have heard most of them say they do not need what the NEA offers and would rather keep the dues money for themselves. That is in this suburban county. Who knows what it is like in the urban centers? Probably not so amiable. I don’t think the teachers here would be too happy with someone who gets full pay for teaching one class a day and then double dipping for the teachers’ union the rest of the day. No wonder that teacher in NY had “no comment.”

They do get to retire here after 30 years. In some systems they get a bonus of one and a half times their last salary for every 10 years they teach in that system. Along with their Va Retirement System and health benefits. The ones I know go on to other careers, and live very comfortably. I’m happy for them but I think early 50’s is too early to retire with all those benefits.

    • I’m in VA too Ting ! I’ve never talked union with my teacher friends and they all appear very happy.

My son’s family just moved to Reston (Fairfax County), which has the best public schools in the country as fair as standards go and why they chose that area. The girls started school in South Florida where all the elementary schools require uniforms (cute khaki shorts and a polo shirt) which I loved, and their mom misses now …. yes, clothing wars every morning, even in 2nd grade !

Until we moved, I worked in Stockton. I posted the link and asked if any of my friends were friends with Volatile Richard. So far, no one has admitted to it. Of course, I could just have better friends, too. You never know.

  5. Happy Sunday!

The temps are crawling up a bit here – but still too cold to enjoy outdoors, so will entertain myself with chores and indoor projects. Hope you all have a good one!

Thank you for fixing the posts.I wasn’t aware of the moderation thing, and I was trying to get done before I had to go to CPR re-certification training. The state of Wisconsin is very strict about the training and licensing you need, even when you are a non-emergency medical transport like me.

Too bad the state of Wisconsin isn’t so “very strict” about state employees conducting an illegal strike and getting paid by submitting phony sick excuses. *eyeroll*

Hope everyone had a good weekend! I did my Equine Therapy Saturday. What a great way to spend the day! I brought work home this weekend, and spent most of today doing that.
