We are having FB debates about our city’s 1% earnings tax – we get to vote on it next Tuesday on whether or not we retain it.
The more I think about it, the more I love this tax. I know, a republican loving a tax? But it’s a flat tax just on wages earned, everyone within KC and those who work in KC pays it. I prefer it to a property tax because eventually, when you retire, you won’t have to pay it anymore – whereas property taxes on houses and cars you will have to pay yearly as long as you own them. As someone who hopes that her hubby can retire in the future, I’d rather have a tax that gets phased out of my household than to add taxes to our property taxes which if we do not pay them our house can get taken by the city after three years of non-payment.
The slightly unfair part of this tax is that if you work but do not live in the city you still have to pay for it. However, it’s such a low amount and since it pays for services you may have to use while on the job (streets, police, fire, etc) I’ve heard from a couple non-resident payors that they hope we retain the tax.

I love your reasoning. I never thought about retirement re: property tax.

    • So you move to a place where the property tax drops from around $2000/year to less than $400/year.

You could! And who knows, we might just do that….but we like where we live now and it’s close to family. So if we were to stay here forever, I’d rather the earnings tax stay than get lumped into property taxes.
One good thing – the MO constitution requires cities to have a balanced budget – so if the tax gets repealed no debt for our city! They HAVE to make cuts.

Once again, the Left lets us know that the Real Reasons we don’t agree with their views is that we’re stupid and mean-spirited. ::rollingeyes::
