I got this in email with text saying it is a real photo, not a photo shop. It is such a potent image. At first blush, the eagle sitting on a gravestone in a military cemetery moved me with pride and a gritty commitment to be the best citizen I can be.
Then the mist and bare trees made me think of our country’s dire economy and I began to see the eagle in a cemetery as a sad symbol of the possible death of our founders’ grand dream.
Then I remembered that time of tremendous pride in our exceptional nation when we all heard, “The Eagle has landed.” And I was filled with hope that the sun will again rise on our nation and the eagle will soar once more.
It really is up to us. At the close of the Constitutional Convention, a woman asked Benjamin Franklin what type of government the Constitution was bringing into existence.
Franklin replied, “A republic, if you can keep it.”
