Well, actually, comments elsewhere are saying they are not tanks. I personally don’t find it alarming to see a train of them. They could be going to another “outfitter” to put something else in/on. Not all builds on vehicles are done at one factory. Neither are rebuilds and/or modifications to old/refurbished one. Maybe it is the same way with “tanks” or whatever these are.

Question, if troops are/have been brought home from Iraq, don’t we have to bring the equipment back too and we are going to be seeing alot of the stuff?

I think it’s comforting. If we didn’t keep our troops trained and our equipment ready, we’d hardly be in a position to protect and defend anything much.
We had very little military capability when WWII started. My father was one of the “too old to enlist, but wanted to serve” people who was hired to do hurry-up prep for Navy officer training on college campuses.
Another relative of a relative crossed the Atlantic “berthed” on a patch of the floor of one of the swimming pools on a luxury liner that had been commandeered for troop transport.
That would really put the fear of God into militaristic whackos like Ahmadinnerjacket, wouldn’t it? He threatens to close the Straight of Hormuz and we threaten to send the Love Boat to stop him.

You’re right, Chrissy. I just had a visceral reaction to seeing so much war materiel in one place — it looks like gearing up for WW3.

I’m fairly clueless about military hardware, but based on the pics below that I got from surfing the net, the train could be carrying tanks or troops carriers. The bases look the same. I’m guessing they use similar hardware as much as possible to make repairs easier.
I do know from the horse’s mouths that we ship equipment over and back all the time. We also ship it around the country for repairs and for troop maneuvers. As in, practice not warfare.
But the equipment on that train didn’t come home from Iraq. Wrong color.

Well, here is what I picked up. Seems to be on a technicality they are not tanks???

Seems to me it is a tank on steroids, which is still, well, a tank! Doesn’t seem too popular, though, to call it that. I am glad our troops have them.

I think you’re right. Also from Wikipedia’s entry on Tanks…
I think the biggest distinction is that traditional tanks had a much larger caliber weapon. So, we could sit around and debate it all day and never convince those who don’t want to think it’s a tank that it is, but I say it’s a modern-day tank!
