Personhood

Both houses of the North Dakota state legislature have passed a personhood amendment that will be placed on the 2014 general ballot. The amendment states that human life begins at conception and that from that moment on is protected under the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution which states:

“Section 1: All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”

Abortion is the first time in the history of what we call the civil rights movement that a class of human beings LOST rights. The unborn were persons under the law until the Supreme Court suddenly discovered that, oops, unborn Americans were not persons, but property. Kinda like black slaves used to be just property, not persons. The North Dakota amendment is the first sign I’ve seen that this might be getting rolled back. It’s way past time.

I had 7 amniocentesis procedures during my third pregnancy. Every time I went for another one, my unborn baby would become agitated. During the sixth amnio, she moved around so much, the doctor had to remove the needle and try again twice for fear she’d hit my daughter, who was thrashing around in my womb. I was very sore afterwards from being punctured so often! When I went in for the seventh, my daughter began thrashing before I even got into my gown. I think she had learned to associate the strong antiseptic smell of the office with that intrusive object violating her sanctuary. This time, I had a different, wiser doctor. He had an assistant push down on my womb to shift my daughter to a safe distance before plunging the needle in, so I only had one stick that time. Please understand: At no time was my daughter actually touched by that needle! All they did was stick it into the sac, suck out 10 ccs of amniotic fluid and pull it back out. Yet she clearly resented it enough to learn what sounds and smells (tastes?) meant it was going to be coming at her again.
