This is just crazy. I don’t remember when I initially registered, but I think it was in my senior year of high school, at school. 18 year olds had just gotten the right to vote, and although I was still 17, I would be 18 by the next election. I did vote in that election, by absentee ballot. I had to go to the Bursar’s office at college and get a notary to witness my absentee ballot.
A few years later, once I was married and living in an adjacent county, my husband and I had to take off early from work and go up to the county courthouse and swear on some affadavit to the clerk that we had moved to that county.
I really didn’t think any of it was that big a deal. I guess the way it is now, they get all the lazy people registered so they can vote to tax all of the productive people.

That’s why there’s voter registration at the DMV, the food stamp office, the WIC office, the housing assistance office, the homeless shelter, etc., etc. Soon they’ll be registering them to vote at Planned Parenthood clinics, if they aren’t already.

Yeah, that too. The VAWA just happens to be a pet peeve of mine. To hear its supporters tell it, violence against women was perfectly legal and permissible and socially acceptable prior to VAWA, and would once again become legal and permissible and socially acceptable if VAWA were allowed to expire. The scary thing is that a lot of low-infomation voters believe them.

It’s like the hate crimes stuff. The things they’re supposed “protecting” us from with new laws are already illegal. The point of the news laws is to further infringe on our rights. Hate crime legislates against thoughts. That’s just nuts. It might matter at sentencing what the person’s motives were, but it has no bearing on whether or not he committed the crime.

So-called “hate crimes” legislation is another one of my pet peeves. It’s unconstitutional, for starters, because it violates the principal of equal protection under the law. For instance, if someone murdered my son, who is white and heterosexual, the punishment would be less severe than if my son were black and/or gay, because then it would be a hate crime. And how many violent crimes are motivated by love, anyway? Isn’t every crime a hate crime?

Excellent points. Maybe we need an addition to the Bill of Rights to protect us from being prosecuted for “thought crimes” or any other imaginary violations our idiot CongressCritters dream up that don’t really have a bearing on whether a crime was actually committed. Like safety laws. Or laws that penalize you for the kind of weapon you use to repel a burglar, or whether you were sleep-deprived when you had an accident. Or even laws that severely penalize you for being “at risk” of causing an accident – like drunk driving laws.
