It’s common knowledge that Mother’s Day is the busiest day in the restaurant business. It’s the day dad and the kids take mom out so she gets a day without cooking or doing dishes. DW gets flowers, cards, phone calls, all in appreciation of the sacrifices she makes. It’s a lifelong commitment. It was a labor of love. Now all our daughters have children of their own who are exceptionally well-behaved (according to the kids; the parents have a very different view). I remember my kids would grab my change when I threw it in the dresser and put it in a jar. Then just before Mother’s Day they’d bring me the jar of change and want folding money so they can buy mom a present. So they sucked up to mom, with money they lifted off me. I didn’t care, they were my kids.
Then, when Father’s Day came along, they’d ask me for a couple bucks to buy me a pack of cigarettes. Then they weren’t even my brand. And they smoked half of them on the way home. Here ya go, dad. Call us when the burgers are ready. Then I’d go sit in the garage and sulk until Monday (kidding….we didn’t have a garage!).
We’re having supper tonight with D#1,along with RJ Pistol and his suddenly grown-up sister. The little town they live in has a really good pizza/Italian restaurant. I can’t wait.

The Hispanic owners of a BBQ restaurant in Colorado will host a “White Appreciation Day” next month. The idea started as a joke, but the BBQ owners decided to actually go through with the event.
“Edgar Antillon and Miguel Jimenez recently purchased Rubbin Buttz BBQ on Broad Street. On June 11, they plan to offer a 10 percent discount to all white customers and no one else.”

Professor: If You Read To Your Kids, You’re ‘Unfairly Disadvantaging’ Others

According to a professor at the University of Warwick in England, parents who read to their kids should be thinking about how they’re “unfairly disadvantaging other people’s children” by doing so.
At one point, Swift even flirted with the idea of “simply abolishing the family” as a way of “solving the social justice problem” because “there would be a more level playing field” if we did, but ultimately concluded that “it is in the child’s interest to be parented” and that “parenting a child makes for what we call a distinctive and special contribution to the flourishing and well-being of adults.”

I read to my kids all the time when they were little. I also stayed married to their father, which further unfairly advantaged them. I also took them to the library once or twice a month, and took them to museums and parks and zoos and stuff, which unfairly advantaged them even more. And I fed them nutritious home-cooked meals, and took them to dance classes and piano lessons and swimming lessons and martial arts classes. (You never knew I was such a terrible person, did you?)
Oh, and I plan to do all of that and more with my grandson, too.

The White House sent Cabinet Secretary Broderick Johnson, chair of the Obama administration’s My Brother’s Keeper Task Force; Heather Foster, an adviser in the White House Office of Public Engagement; and Elias Alcantara from the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs.
Gray also had a history of run-ins with the law. According to court documents CNN obtained, there were more than 20 criminal court cases in Maryland against Gray, and five of those cases were still active at the time of his death.
But the White House did not send any officials to Officer Brian Moore’s funeral today.

Danielle, the Price Is Right contestant in a wheelchair who won a treadmill as a prize, was interviewed by Jimmy Kimmel on Wednesday. Danielle talked about how she felt when she found out one of her rewards was a treadmill, saying “I was just focused on cash and prizes.”

I never thought about it, but in all the years of watching “Price Is Right” going back to a young Bob Barker (and I even barely remember Bill Cullen!) I don’t think I ever saw a contestant in a wheelchair. I guess there must be ramps to get onto the stage, but I only ever saw contestants bounding up the three or four stairs on the side.
Funny how we sometimes don’t even know what we haven’t noticed until hindsight, and good for TPIR for expanding our horizons (and God must be having a laugh at the treadmill prize!).

Have fun with the fam, Pete! You are not much older than I am, but I do not seem to be anywhere close to having even infant grandchildren. We are a bunch of late bloomers in the Ting family. But that’s okay – only one of them is even married, and that hasn’t been 6 months yet. So I’m perfectly content to wait.
