This is normally the time Chrissy would post some significant thoughts on Catholicism and the church. Unfortunately being an alleged member of the Church of the Nazarene we don’t observe Lent. We mostly do the biggies like Easter and Christmas. The only reason for my membership is as a shining example that God has a twisted sense of humor.
Ashes to Ashes
If there ever is a day of the year when you can spot Catholics at a glance, Ash Wednesday is it. It is the one time when Catholics literally wear their faith on their foreheads. In fact, Masses on Ash Wednesday are better attended than Masses on most holy days, except Christmas.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent for Catholics. The ashes we receive on our forehead in the shape of a cross serve as an outward sign of our sinfulness and need for penance. The ashes also symbolize our mortality, a reminder that one day we will die and our bodies will return to dust. Hence the traditional words, “Remember that thou art dust and unto dust thou shalt return.”
The tradition of receiving ashes has its origins in the Old Testament, where sinners performed acts of public penance. It was Pope Urban II who in the 11th century recommended that all Catholics take part in the practice of receiving ashes on Ash Wednesday. In the 12th century it became customary that the ashes used on Ash Wednesday were made by burning the previous year’s palm branches.
Ash Wednesday is also a day of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. According to Church law, Catholics older than the age of 14 are supposed to abstain from meat. In addition, those between the ages of 18 and 59, not including pregnant or nursing mothers, should eat only one full meal. Smaller amounts of food, not as much as a full meal, may be eaten in the morning and either at lunchtime or dinner, depending on when you eat your full meal.

When Maine Required Childless Adults to Work to Get Food Stamps, Guess What Happened
The number of food stamp recipients has risen dramatically, from 17.2 million in 2000 to 45.8 million in 2015. Costs have soared over the same period, from $20.7 billion in 2000 to $83.1 billion in 2014.
The most rapid growth in the food stamp caseload in recent years has been among able-bodied adults without dependents (ABAWDs). These are work-capable adult recipients between the ages of 18 and 49 who do not have children or other dependents to support.

The Washington Free Beacon just reported that Nation of Islam kook Louis Eugene Wolcott (AKA Calypso Louie Farrakhan) will be traveling to Iran to speak at a rally marking the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.
Well, goodie. If we’re really lucky, maybe they’ll keep him.
Farrakhan, as well as other leaders of the global Islamic movement, will travel to Iran to participate in festivities surrounding the 1979 revolution, in which Iranian hardliners deposed the former government, according to Iran’s state-controlled Fars News Agency.

Any word on Chrissy, BTW? I still have not got a call back from my message on DH’s phone. I DID try again on another number I found that had his name on the voicemail message! So that’s good. Hopefully, he’ll call back soon.

Good news! I just got in from shoveling snow and had 2 messages from Chrissy’s DH. No indication of any crisis, but hard to say until I get to ask the questions. I’ll keep calling back…

Ok, final update: Just got off the phone with DH and Chrissy. All is good and she’s at home (not in hospital), but she’s particularly weak and hasn’t been able to write at all. It sounds like she’s been recovering, though, and I think she’s moving around some today. They both ask for us to continue prayers for her health! So, let’s keep that up, please! I also heard her say in the background: “Thank you all” for the prayers and concern.
Hopefully, we’ll see some more posts from her shortly!
