That changed, though, when European settlers arrived on the east coast bringing bee colonies with them. It would take over 200 years for bees to travel across the country and reach the west coast.
Bees play such an important role in pollination that some farmers rent hives to help increase the yield of their crop. Sixteen states have named them State Insect: Arkansas, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, and Wisconsin. Because they are raised in order to make honey and pollinate crops, bees can be thought of as an agricultural animal, just like sheep and cows.
