2024: Former President Donald Trump said he’s prepared to debate Vice President Kamala Harris on Sept. 4 on Fox News, although the vice president declined and insisted on the Sept. 10 debate on ABC. Of course she did.

CENSORSHIP: A U.S. District court has upheld the first and fourteen amendment rights of three students at Clovis Community College in Fresno, CA. The school’s policy, which forbade displaying materials containing language or themes deemed “inappropriate” or “offensive”, was used to rip down anticommunist posters put up by the students’ campus chapter of Young Americans for Freedom (YAF).
All the parties in the lawsuit consented. It cost taxpayers $330,000 to defend ripping down the posters … $250,000 to cover the students’ legal expenses, plus $20,000 each in damages to the three students and the YAF.
In addition, the district agrees to conduct annual First Amendment training sessions for all administrators going forward.

SCREEN USE: A study entitled “Functional connectivity changes in the brain of adolescents with internet addiction: A systematic literature review of imaging studies” was published on June 4, 2024, in PLOS Ment Health. It reports on a meta analysis of studies looking into the effects of internet addiction (IA) on developing brains.
Basically, they found that it is bad news. Individuals with IA (or the associated Internet Gaming Disorder” have similar impulse control issues as those with gambling and substance addictions. These display as an inability to stop the behavior despite its negative effects on their physical, psychological, social, academic, and professional well-being.
The study notes that “adolescence is a crucial developmental stage during which people go through significant changes in their biology, cognition, and personalities … which creates risk of psychopathological vulnerability.”
IOW, excessive screen use by adolescents is likely to cause actual changes in their brains.
And here’s a scary thought. A 2023 Statista survey found that U.S. teenagers spent an average of 4.8 hours on social media platforms every day, with girls spending an average of 5.3 hours compared to 4.4 hours for boys. That’s the average.

VATICAN: It only took a week for top dog Catholics to finally get a round tuit and, even then, it was pretty bland stuff.
“In a prestigious event where the whole world comes together around common values, there should not be allusions ridiculing the religious convictions of many people. Freedom of expression, which is obviously not called into question, finds its limit in respect for others.”
