AMERICAN HISTORY: On January 18, 1911, Eugene Ely flew a Curtis Pusher biplane from this location, Tanforan Park in San Bruno, CA, and landed on a wooden platform constructed aboard the Navy Cruiser USS Pennsylvania anchored in the San Francisco Bay. This, the first ever landing of an airplane on a ship, contributed significantly to the development of Naval aviation.
HEALTH: I am very grateful to have lived in a community that said no to fluoride. They tried once that I’m aware of. I wrote a letter to the editor pointing out that it would be a huge waste of money to dump fluoride into the millions of gallons of water we use for washing and flushing. Since people who wanted fluoride and could afford it were able to get it in drops and toothpaste, I suggested making it available to low income families at the free vaccination clinics already serving that population. I like to think my thoughts contributed to the city dropping the issue.

WOMEN’S SPORTS: The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has launched Title IX investigations into 18 school districts in California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont and Washington. Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Kimberly Richey said, “Time and again, the Trump administration has made its position clear: Violations of women’s rights, dignity, and fairness are unacceptable. We will leave no stone unturned in these investigations to uphold women’s right to equal access in education programs, a fight that started over half a century ago and is far from finished.”
GRAMMY NOTES: In 1979, my then-boyfriend and I went to a donut shop in the wee hours to discuss the pros and cons of getting married. As I wrote them out on a napkin, the truckers who were also there helped out. LOL We met 47 years ago this month and celebrated our 46th anniversary last fall. ❤
