AMERICAN HISTORY: On February 10, 1899, Herbert Hoover and Lou Henry were married at the bride’s parents’ home in Monterey, California. The couple had met at Stanford University where they were both studying geology. In fact, Lou Henry would become the first woman to earn a geology degree from that institution.
After marrying, the couple lived in abroad for a number of years. During their time in China, both learned Mandarin, a language they would occasionally use later in the White House to speak privately.
They also spent years jointly and painstakingly translating a medieval Latin text on mining and metallurgyentitled De Re Metallica by Georgius Agricola . Published in 1912, their edition remains the standard English version used by historians, engineers, and archaeologists. Lou Hoover’s contribution was substantial: she handled much of the Latin translation while Herbert focused on interpretation of medieval technical terms.

CLIMATE HOAX: In the philosophy of science, a theory’s predictive power and explanatory power are among the most important criteria used to judge its quality, success, and scientific status. The two should work in tandem. E.g., a theory that truly explains why something happens should also accurately predict what will happen under various conditions. Conversely, a scientific theory with weak predictive and/or explanatory powers is weak science, pseudoscience, or non-science.
