EDUCATION: Audrey van der Meer, a Norwegian neuroscientist, hooked 36 university students up to a scalp cap that had 256 sensors. Then, she flashed words on to a screen. Sometimes the students wrote the word by hand on a touchscreen using a digital pen and sometimes they typed the same word on a keyboard. Every neural response was recorded for the full five seconds the word stayed on screen.
When the students wrote by hand, the brain regions responsible for memory, sensory integration, and the encoding of new information all fired in a coordinated pattern that spread across the entire cortex. But when the same students typed the same word, most of their brains went quiet.
Another study done at Princeton compared meaningful recall of information among hundreds of students. While watching lectures, half took typed their notes, while the other half wrote by hand. The handwriting group scored far higher on every question that required real understanding rather than surface recall.

RIGHT TO REPAIR: Like many companies (especially car manufacturers), John Deere has used software to monopolize repairs, which drives up prices. The Federal Trade Commission, along with five states, just settled an antitrust lawsuit against Deere & Company requiring the company give farmers and independent repair shops access to the equipment and software needed to do repairs.

Typing v handwriting: ‘Way back in 2011, when winter storms kept the power going out and the battery backup didn’t, I just left the computer off. Instead, I started on what I intended to be a “graphic novel” (comic-book type story). I had a shirtpocket-sized blank booklet and did some initial sketches.
It was a story idea I’d had many years previously, but the plot of which I just couldn’t get to work right. It was about a kind of passive super-power that seemingly kept people safe from harm, invulnerable I set the notes in a file and forgot about the story until that computerless winter day.
After several pages of sketches, the story started quickly percolating in my mind. I picked up a legal pad and started writing out the story. Several legal pads later, I got through the whole story, which worked just as I’d originally wanted. Almost seemed to write itself. Characters and events manifested practically unbidden. I realized that handwriting really opened up the creative doors, compared to keyboarding. Studies on left and right brain with split brains (corpus collosum severed) seem related.
Couldn’t get to illustrating the whole thing, so the story went online with little editing. Starts with the original comic sketches, then transitions to text, just as it came to me. Not a great work, but I re-read it about once a year and it seems okay.
Sad to relate, my hands don’t work well anymore for handwriting, and so other stories hidden in my brain may just never get written.
