AMERICAN HISTORY: On July 27, 1909, Orville Wright flew the first army airplane a record one hour and 12 minutes and 40 seconds. They flew at an average of 40 miles per hour, showed the plane could be maneuvered in any direction, and landed without damage, successfully completing the flight requirements set by their Department of War contract. In October, they taught the first two Army pilots to fly the new planes.
