SURROGACY: When you treat babies as property, you’re going to get messes like the following – A single man from China hired Kyla Simpson to gestate and give birth to triplets who were not biologically related to her. The babies were born prematurely and one passed away.
The father/buyer, Chen Zhou, said he was having problems obtaining a visa to come retrieve the babies, so Simpson and her husband took care of them for 20 months. In May of 2026, the birthmother filed a request to terminate Zhou’s parental rights. At the request of Zhou’s attorney, the boys were moved from the Simpsons to the care of a hired nanny where they are living while Zhou waits for a court date.
Simpson makes the obvious point that she and her husband are the only people the boys know “as mom and dad. We took great care of them, provided everything for them, their day-to-day care, you name it.“
Does anyone in these surrogacy arrangements consider the children? And I’m including Kyla Simpson in this. She knew from the start she was going to hand the babies over to a single, male, Chinese citizen! How much did he pay her? Do these little boys even have any rights? Or is it all about what the adults with the most money want?

GRAMMY NOTES: I just got done dead-heading and tidying up my petunias. It got me thinking about something I think St. Teresa of Avila (?) wrote about how God gardens our souls. First, he takes out the big weed-sins that are blocking the sun and sucking up all the nutrients. This exposes smaller weed-sins that need to go, followed by smaller and smaller weed-sins He wants us to remove, until our souls are thriving and blooming with spiritual fruit.
I got to thinking about what comes after most of the weed-sins are gone, because I didn’t just trim dead blooms off my petunias. I also cut off entire branches that were healthy, but that were preventing good air flow around the dirt and roots, which could allow mold to set in. I need to be equally ruthless about cutting out seemingly good things in my life that put me into the path of temptation!
And finally, I cut off healthy, budded branches that were simply interfering with the overall shape of the display I prefer. Surely, God has His own idea of what He wants my spiritual garden to look like. When I feel Him pruning something that, on the face of it is good and holy, something I want and like and maybe even worked hard to grow, I need to let go of it, trusting that He knows best.
