EVERYDAY HEROES: Every Sunday after church for a year, Edna Kowalski took a cab to the county animal shelter to visit Chester, an old beagle mix who’d been at the shelter for two years. Within a month, the volunteers noticed Chester waiting at the front of his kennel by 11 every Sunday, before her cab even pulled into the parking lot. When the cab ran late, Chester paced until he heard Edna’s voice.
When a volunteer finally asked Edna why she didn’t just adopt Chester, she explained that her lease didn’t allow it and she couldn’t afford to move on her pension. When the shelter director told Edna’s building manager about how Edna had visited Chester 52 Sundays in a row, the manager agreed to allow Edna to adopt him.

NORTH CAROLINA: A year ago, a student at Ardrey Kell High School asked for and received permission to paint the above message on the school’s “spirit rock.” Within hours of the message appearing, school officials ordered it to be painted over, then publicly humiliated and slandered the student. The girl and her parents sued. The school board just settled, agreeing to pay $95,000 in costs and attorneys’ fees and issuing a public statement apologizing to and clearing the student of all wrongdoing.
