AMERICAN HISTORY: On September 26, 1960, John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon took part in America’s first televised debate between two presidential candidates. An estimated 70 million viewers – at that time the largest audience ever – tuned in to watch. However, it was not the first televised debate during a presidential campaign.
That occurred almost four years earlier, on November 4, 1956, when former First Lady and party icon Eleanor Roosevelt (representing Adlai Stevenson) debated Republican and senior senator from Maine, Margaret Chase Smith (representing Dwight Eisenhower). The first televised presidential debate featured two women.

EVERYDAY HEROES: Captain Tammie Jo Shults was piloting Southwest Flight 1380 when an engine fan blade snapped, ripping apart the left engine and sending shrapnel tearing into the fuselage. A cabin window blew out, causing a violent, rapid decompression that sucked one passenger out of the plane. Oxygen masks dropped, alarms screamed, and wind roared through the plane as it plummeted into a steep bank.
Captain Shults was no stranger to extreme pressure. She was one of the first female fighter pilots in the U.S. Navy, accustomed to landing high-performance jets on moving aircraft carriers at night. Now she was responsible for the 148 souls still aboard a commercial airliner that was tearing itself apart. She calmly informed air traffic control of the plane’s status, then landed the 737 safely. Once the plane rolled to a stop. She walked down the aisle, looked every single passenger in the eye, and personally hugged them.
SOUTH AFRICA: The second Trump administration has effectively shut down the U.S. refugee resettlement program, but has made an exemption for Afrikaners who are being oppressed for being White. The State Department says they’ve got 17,500 refugee spots for them for fiscal year 2027, which begins in October 2026.
