Obama’s continued assault on Catholics

Catholic charity

  • The HHS Mandate demands that Catholic organizations pay for birth control and abortifacients.
  • Another Obamacare mandate requires hospitals to be fined for taking charity cases.

Next up … Obama’s latest “Who cares about Congress?!” executive order mandates that

  • any agency receiving federal assistance may not discriminate based on sexual orientation.

Sounds compassionate, right? Wrong. It will force Catholic charities (e.g., adoption agencies) to shut down rather than violate church teachings.

Even the left-of-center National Catholic Reporter understands what is at stake. Fr. Thomas Reese claims that “Depending on what exemptions [the executive order provides], the new requirement may affect Catholic Relief Services, Catholic hospitals, Catholic education, and other Catholic charities that received Federal funds.”

Fr. Reese reports that “In 2010, the Washington archdiocese … got out of the adoption business when gay marriage became legal in the city. It was also threatened with the loss of funding to help the poor when the city council required that employers with city contracts provide spousal benefits to gay employees. Instead, the charities eliminated spousal benefits for all future employees. Since heterosexual employees would not receive spousal benefits, the agencies could not be accused of discrimination.”  (Ital added by CtH)

Yeah, that really worked well. NOT.

2013_08 25 Dennis Miller makes Pelosi joke

June 20, 2014: Nancy Pelosi’s snotty anti-marriage letter to Archbishop Cordileone might’ve garnered her kudos from her Leftist bffs, but it backfired with Catholics.  At least four “Pelosi Busses” full of Catholics fed up with Nancy are going to the March For Marriage BECAUSE they’re fed up with Nancy!

Catholic kick me sex abuse toon

Anti-Catholic prejudice, particularly with regard to priest sex abuse, seems to be one of the most culturally acceptable forms of prejudice in our nation. People who would never DREAM of making a negative remark about a person because of their race, color, gender or sexuality seem to be ever-ready to flip the bird at Catholics.

Enough, I say! Particularly with regard to priest sexual abuse. Even NEWSWEEK admits Catholic priests are no worse than other religious professionals.

I am a clergy sexual abuse survivor, so I know more about this and have hotter feelings than your average Catholic pew warmer. I attended a 3-day retreat for clergy abuse survivors that was part of a nation-wide program serving any and all denominations. The leader had us raise our hands by denomination and what we had was a fair representation of Christian denominations, which are the ones that obviously dominate American churches.

She made a special point of demonstrating to the Protestants that the Catholics in the group were fairly represented statistically as a subset of Christians in the U.S. She said that was typical but that she had also had survivors at retreats from the less-than-2% denominations. She specifically mentioned Jewish and Buddhist at that retreat, which was about 20 years ago. Now, I’d expect Muslims would be mentioned as well.

Ernie Allen, president of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children says, “We don’t see the Catholic Church as a hotbed of this or a place that has a bigger problem than anyone else. I can tell you without hesitation that we have seen cases in many religious settings, from traveling evangelists to mainstream ministers to rabbis and others.”

Insurance companies that offer sexual misconduct coverage as a rider on church liability insurance say they do not charge Catholic churches higher premiums, because Catholic churches are not higher risk than other congregations.

So if you hear anyone sneering at us mackerel-snappers, could you please do me and mine a favor and give that prejudiced snarker a little reality check for me? You don’t need to smack them upside the head, but if that seems appropriate, I won’t fault you any. 🙂

Catholics respond with the power of prayer

When a group at Harvard announced they planned to hold a Satanic Black Mass ritual on Monday, May 12, 2014, Catholics responded by scheduling a Eucharistic Procession and Holy Hour for 8-9 PM at St. Paul’s Church to make reparation and to pray. These are my favorite photos from the event.

2014_05 12 Holy Hour - response to black mass

Part of Harvard President’s statement:

“Consistent with the University’s commitment to free expression, including expression that may deeply offend us, the decision to proceed is and will remain theirs. At the same time, we will vigorously protect the right of others to respond—and to address offensive expression with expression of their own. I plan to attend a Eucharistic Holy Hour and Benediction at St. Paul’s Church on our campus on Monday evening in order to join others in reaffirming our respect for the Catholic faith at Harvard and to demonstrate that the most powerful response to offensive speech is not censorship, but reasoned discourse and robust dissent.”

The Black Mass was canceled after its sponsor withdrew support and the group was unable to find any venue to host the event.

200 years ago in American law

1813_04 People v Philips

Last year, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of this landmark case, the trial was recreated on stage by the Center for Irish and Irish-American Studies at NYU.  Videos of the performance are posted at YouTube if you want to see it.  The full play is in 6 parts; the link should create easy access to Parts 2-6 to appear on the right side of the screen.

Sebelius gets a visit from the Irony Fairy

A fitting farewell to Kathleen: A page is missing from her buh bye remarks binder. Missing enrollment numbers, missing number of previously uninsured, missing speech page.

My fave tweets:

  • Sebelius actually bungled her FAREWELL SPEECH. This Administration is truly beyond parody.
  • Garbage In Garbage Out! Sloppy and slovenly from top to bottom.
  • If you like your speech, you ca
  • If I had a nickel for the number of times the Obamacare website has said “PAGE NOT FOUND”
  • Sebelius’ full speech has been delayed until next month.
  • Maybe she should have read it first to see what was in there, eh?

2014_04 11 Missing page

God has an awesome sense of humor. As governor, this vile woman continued to claim she was a good Catholic even as she partied with, accepted money from and legally protected the nation’s leading late-term abortion butcher, George Tiller. As SecHHS, she oversaw the legal and financial targeting of Catholic institutions, business and individuals. I take great comfort in knowing her real reward still awaits.

It is a pastor’s DUTY to chastize the SINNER

2014_04 Durbin's pastor says no Eucharist for you

Bishop Paprocki, who was installed in 2010, recently issued a public statement in support of Durbin’s pastor:

“Senator Durbin was informed several years ago by his pastor at Blessed Sacrament Parish here in Springfield that he was not permitted to receive Holy Communion per canon 915 of the Code of Canon Law,” Paprocki wrote. “My predecessor upheld that decision and it remains in effect. It is my understanding that the senator is complying with that decision here in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois.”

Sacred Catholic art treasures smashed by violent Muslims

Millions of Christians in Syria are suffering mass genocide at the hands of Obama-supported Muslims in Syria.

And the world is silent.

Remember when Obama and Clinton fell all over themselves to apologize to Muslims for an amateurish anti-Muslim video on YouTube that only a few hundred ever viewed?

Where’s their outrage over this appalling desecration of the St. Mary’s Greek Catholic Church in Yabroud?

2014_04 01 Church smashed - Syria

These are cultural treasures, sacred to the people who made and maintain them.  Even if you think Catholics are idolators, the damage to private property should outrage you and the damage to the artwork should make you weep.

Pope Francis: Leading by example

Traditionally, popes have heard confessions of some faithful in the basilica on Good Friday morning.  But Francis had the service three weeks early.

2014_03 28 Pope Francis went to Confession

And he surprised his master of ceremonies by going to confession in public himself.  After receiving absolution, Pope Francis went to another confessional and spent about 40 minutes hearing confessions.

Pope Francis on penance: Conversion is not just for Lent [2:37]

In his homily, the Pope said following God’s call to conversion is not supposed to happen only during Lent, but is a lifetime commitment.  When hearts are renewed and “created in God’s way” good behavior follows, he said.  For example,

“always speaking the truth and steering clear of all lies; no stealing, but rather, sharing what one has with others, especially with those in need; not giving in to anger, rancor and revenge, but being meek, magnanimous and ready to forgive; not taking part in malicious gossip that ruins the good name of people, but looking mainly for the good side in everyone.”

God’s love cannot be held inside, he said.

“It’s open by its very nature; it spreads and is fruitful.  It always generates new love.”

In that missionary spirit, the penitential liturgy opened an initiative called “24 Hours for the Lord” sponsored by the Pontifical Council for Promoting New Evangelisation.

The council asked dioceses around the world to have at least one parish open all day and night on March 28, so that anyone could go to Confession and take part in Eucharistic Adoration.  It’s part of the Pope’s focus on celebrating God’s mercy and power of forgiveness.

Pope Francis has urged priests not to be too lax or too harsh during Confession and to make sure people always know when the sacrament of reconciliation is available.

“Let’s not forget that the faithful often struggle to take part in the sacrament, both for practical reasons and because of the natural difficulty in confessing one’s own sins to another person.  For that reason we have to work really hard on who we are, on our humanity, so as to never be an obstacle, but to always help people be drawn to mercy and forgiveness.”

He also spoke about Confession during a public audience in February saying,

“Everyone say to himself: ‘When was the last time I went to confession?’  And if it has been a long time, don’t lose another day!  Go, the priest will be good. And Jesus, (will be) there, and Jesus is better than the priests – Jesus receives you.  He will receive you with so much love! Be courageous, and go to confession.”

He also said,

“The sacrament of reconciliation is a sacrament of healing.  When I go to confession, it’s for healing: healing the soul, healing the heart because of something that I did to make it unwell.”

Bury the dead

Bury the dead is the seventh in the traditional Catholic list of Corporal Works of Mercy.

  • The Corporal Works of Mercy: To feed the hungry; To give drink to the thirsty; To clothe the naked; To harbour the harbourless (offer hospitality to the homeless); To visit the sick (care for the sick); To ransom the captive (visit the imprisoned); To bury the dead.
  • The Spiritual Works of Mercy: To instruct the ignorant; To counsel the doubtful; To admonish sinners; To bear wrongs patiently; To forgive offenses willingly; To comfort the afflicted (sorrowful); To pray for the living and the dead.

Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin based their Catholic Worker Movement on living out these precepts.

Bury the dead is based on this passage from the Book of Tobit:

In the days of Shalmaneser I had performed many charitable deeds for my kindred, members of my people. I would give my bread to the hungry and clothing to the naked. If I saw one of my people who had died and been thrown behind the wall of Nineveh, I used to bury him. Sennacherib returned from Judea, having fled during the days of the judgment enacted against him by the King of Heaven because of the blasphemies he had uttered; whomever he killed I buried. For in his rage he killed many Israelites, but I used to take their bodies away by stealth and bury them. So when Sennacherib looked for them, he could not find them. But a certain Ninevite went and informed the king about me, that I was burying them, and I went into hiding. When I realized that the king knew about me and that I was being hunted to be put to death, I became afraid and took flight. All my property was confiscated; I was left with nothing. All that I had was taken to the king’s palace, except for my wife Anna and my son Tobiah. (Tobit 1:16-20)

Burying the dead WITH RESPECT is God’s work.

Whatever God wants us to do, SATAN PERVERTS.
