Another look at “Who Really Cares?”

Who really cares w quot

The LA Times is irked about the 2006 book “Who Really Cares,” by Arthur C. Brooks, in which Brooks reported on a DECADE of research, both within the United States and overseas, into the single question of how one’s political beliefs affect one’s personal charitable behavior.

Brooks wrote in his preface that he was raised liberal and went into this field specifically to prove to conservatives that liberals were more charitable. After ten years of finding out he was wrong, wrong and wrong (even abroad), he gave it up and admitted that right-wingers give a larger percentage of their money and more of their time and blood than left-wingers, even when donations to churches are removed.

Two points here are really important, because this LA Times article is very sneering about Brooks’ findings. http://www.latimes.com/business/hiltzik/la-fi-mh-conservatives-or-liberals-20140331-story.html. (Methinks the writer never actually read the book, but is merely reporting on what he kinda sorta heard was reported about it by others.)

Point One: Brooks’ research was his dedicated field of study for a decade. He was TRYING to prove liberals were more generous. He failed. The LA Times article supposedly trashes all that with ONE study slapped together by two guys at MIT?  Riiiiiiiiight.

Point Two:  The MIT and LA Times both stressed that conservatives only give more because they’re generous personally AND to their churches. There are two problems with this. The major one is that Brooks addressed that and found it to be incorrect. There’s a whole bunch of stuff about that in his book … which I read. In fact, I own it. He found that conservatives give more overall AND give a larger percentage of their income and more volunteer hours to both church and to non-church charities; heck we even give more blood!

Also, the attitude expressed in the article is that church donations are inherently “not generous”, because churches only use the money to benefit their own wealthy members. Obviously, these people actually believe that churches are just really boring country clubs, which makes me suspect they have (a) not read Brooks’ book and (b) never spent any time in a real church. Where I live, the kitchen cupboard, soup kitchen, homeless shelter, thrift shop, and “second chance” housing project (for convicts who have served their time) are all church-backed projects. The churches in my area also provide low cost space for non-church activities like day care and aerobics classes.

I can’t speak to other congregations, but my parish never refuses a family the use of our beautiful facility for weddings or funerals just because they have never darkened the doorstep before. And I know for a fact that my diocese continued to fund an inner city school long after the Catholic kids had moved to the burbs. All the students were black Baptists; even the principal was a black Baptist. And no, it wasn’t about proselytizing; it was about providing the ONLY quality educational opportunity that neighborhood had after the public school had become a wasteland of politically correct mediocrity and violence.

Point Three: The LA Times article seems to assume (or totally ignores … probably didn’t read the book) the over-arching point of Brooks’ book, which was that big government welfare is bad for human beings in a way that is rarely or never acknowledged. In short, it makes people selfish and selfishness makes people unhappy. If you haven’t read the book, I encourage you to do so. It’s enlightening and uplifting, unlike the LA Times article which is sneering and left me wanting to take a bath.

Praise You, Jesus, for this young warrior!

2014_06 Brooks Hamby thanked Jesus anyway

Brawley Union School officials edited out all references to Jesus and prayer in three successive versions of Hamby’s graduation address. One administrator went so far as to redact every “dirty bits” religious reference with a black marker.

He and his parents were told that if Brooks interjected “religious content”, the sound would be cut off and a disclaimer to the entire audience made explaining the district’s position.

While Brooks didn’t want to compromise his faith and values by watering down the message, he also wasn’t interested in outright rebellion. So he wrote a fourth version and emailed it to the superintendent, principal and counselor. When it was time for him to speak, he had received no reply from them, so he used it. In part it said:

“In simply coming before you today, I presented three drafts of my speech – all of them denied on account of my desire to share my personal thoughts and inspiration to you in my Christian faith. In life, you will be told no. In life, you will be asked to do things that you have no desire to do. In life, you will be asked to do things that violate your conscience and your desire to do what is right.”

“So I will leave you with this, with a quote from the biggest best-selling book of all time in history: ‘You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot’. Be the salt of the earth, be strong and stand for your convictions and do what is right, ethical, moral, and Godly, no matter the cost to you.”

“May the God of the Bible bless each and every one of you every day in the rest of your lives.”

Nobody shut off the microphone.

Hiram Sasser, an attorney for the Liberty Institute, told Fox News’ Todd Starnes that Brooks was on firm legal ground to deliver the original version of his speech.

“It is outrageous that a government school official would demand that a salutatorian submit his speech for government review for the purpose of censoring religious speech. Even in the Ninth Circuit, no government official may censor simple references to God that served as personal acknowledgment by Brooks of something greater than himself.

God’s hand of discipline is a hand of love

All my prayers have been answered

Thank You, Lord, for showing me my hidden faults, for You treat me as Your dear child.  Help me surrender to Your cleansing work until the beauty of Jesus can be seen in me.

Our Daily Bread meditation by Poh Fang Chia

When I was a child I often had a toothache,” wrote C. S. Lewis in his classic book Mere Christianity. He continued, “and I knew that if I went to my mother she would give me something that would deaden the pain for that night and let me get to sleep. But I did not go to my mother — at least not till the pain became very bad. . . . I knew she would take me to the dentist the next morning. . . . I wanted immediate relief from pain, but I could not get it without having my teeth set permanently right.”

Similarly, we might not always want to go to God right away when we have a problem or are struggling in a certain area. We know that He could provide immediate relief from our pain, but He is more concerned with dealing with the root of the problem. We may be afraid that He will reveal issues that we are unprepared or unwilling to deal with.

In times like these, it is helpful to remind ourselves that the Lord “deals with [us] as with sons” (Heb 12:7). His discipline, though perhaps painful, is wise, and His touch is loving. He loves us too much to let us remain as we are; He wants to conform us to the likeness of His Son, Jesus (Rom 8:29).

God’s purposes of love can be trusted more than any of our emotions of fear.

FIVES and the Fatima Centennial

5 is Mary’s number; Mary is herself and also a symbol for the church (Gen 3:15, Rev 12:4-5).  6 is Satan’s number. 77 is Jesus’ number. 777 is the Trinity.  In 5677, we have Satan standing between Mary/Church and Jesus.  In 5777, we have Mary/Church and the Trinity triumphant.

Is this the century God granted Satan extra power over His church?

We have received two prophecies indicating that God granted Satan a century of power to attack His church. One prophecy came in a vision to Pope Leo XIII in 1884 that was couched in a future tense. The other was during an apparition of Mary at Medjugorje in 1982 that was couched in the present tense. I found a lot of evidence that Satan’s century began in 1917. Today, I discovered something extraordinary that I think adds more specificity and weight to my supposition.

1917 largely overlaps 5677.
From the beginning of 1917 to the end of 2016 is 100 years.
2016 largely overlaps 5776.
From the beginning of 5677 to the end of 5776 is 100 years.
5 is Mary’s number.
6 is Satan’s number.
77 is Jesus’ number.
Mary is both herself and also a symbol for the Church (Gen 3:15, Rev 12:4-5).
In 5677, we have Satan standing between Mary/Church and Jesus.
In 5776, we have Mary/Church and Jesus reunited, with Satan booted to the end.

Our Lady of Fatima

Our Lady of Fatima images

In 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared once a month for six months to three children of Fatima, Portugal, in a field above a small holm oak. Pope Pius XI approved the apparitions in 1930.

The children described her as dressed all in white, with a pure white mantle edged with gold, which fell to her feet. In her hands, she held a rosary whose beads shone like stars, its crucifix the most radiant gem of all. She was encircled by rays of clear and intense light, brighter than the sun, that radiated 4 to 5 feet. At the end of her visits, “she rose slowly in the direction of the east, until she disappeared in the immense distance.”

Our Lady of Fatima is often depicted standing on a little cloud, perhaps because witnesses to the apparition reported seeing a little cloud coming and going when the children said Mary was coming and going. In paintings, she is usually shown with an aura of light or with a halo of 12 stars (Rev 12:1).  Statues often have a crown on her head to show her role as Queen of Heaven (Luke 1:31-33, Psalm 45:6-11). She is also often shown with the symbol of her Immaculate Heart, since this was the devotion she said at Fatima she wished to be established.

616 and the Centennial of the Fatima Angel Apparitions

5776-2016 Centennial of 3 Fatima Angel Apparitions

Click on graphic to embiggen for easier reading of teensy text. Please note: My intention in pointing this out is not to say the apparitions at Fatima were Satanic in origin.  Far from it.  I believe Mary is an integral part of salvation history and that the 20th century apparitions are part of God’s strengthening of His people during the century God granted Satan extra power to try to destroy the church.  See https://polination.wordpress.com/2014/03/21/a-century-of-trial/.

SPRING: Centennial of first angel apparition to three children in Fatima.

  • March 20, 2016 Palm Sunday (Orth April 24, 2016 CE)
  • March 24-25, 2016 Purim (Adar II 14-15, 5776 HY)
  • March 24-25, 2016 Holy Thursday – Good Friday
  • March 27, 2016 Easter (Orth May 1, 2016 CE)
  • April 23-29, 2016 Passover (Nisan 15-21, 5776 HY)

SUMMER: Centennial of second angel apparition to three children in Fatima.

  • May 15, 2016 Pentecost (Orth June 19, 2016 CE)
  • June 12, 2016 Shavu’ot (Sivan 6, 5776 HY)
  • July 24, 2016 17th of Tammuz (Tammuz 18, 5776 HY)*
  • August 14, 2016 Tish’a B’Av (Av 9, 5776 HY)**
  • August 15, 2016 Assumption of Mary (Roman, Orthodox)

AUTUMN: Centennial of third angel apparition to three children in Fatima.***

  • September 8, 2016 Mary’s birthday
  • September 14, 2016 Feast of the Holy Cross

*Tammuz 17 is a Jewish fast day commemorating the breach of the walls of Jerusalem before the destruction of the Second Temple. In 5776, it lands on Sabbath, so the fast is the following day. In 5776, it lands on Sabbath, so the fast is the following day.

**Tish’a B’Av is a Jewish fast day commemorating the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem and the subsequent exile of the Jews from the Land of Israel.

***The angel apparitions aren’t dated, but the spring and summer ones clearly fell within the “616” overlap in both 1916 and 2016.  The autumn one is less secure, since Rosh Hashanah 5677 was September 28, 1916 and Rosh Hashanah 5777 will be October 3, 2017. However, an article at EWTN says that when Mary appeared for the first time on May 13, 1917, “almost eight months had passed since the last apparition of the Angel.”  That puts the autumn angel apparition a little later than, but near September 13, 1916, two full weeks before the end of 5676 HY.

The incredible witness of Jim Caviezel

Jim Caviezel played Jesus in The Passion of the Christ. His testimony here is amazing. Truly jaw dropping. I urge you to find the time. Bring tissues. And listen to the end. The last few minutes are priceless.

Jim Caviezel – Inspirational video [39:26]

Favorite quotes: “Every generation of Americans needs to know that freedom exists not to do what you like, but having the right to do what you ought.” [23:17] “Lay it down for Jesus or deny Him.” [24:06] “Can society exclude moral truth and moral reasoning? You weren’t made to fit in. You were made to stand out.” [26:36] “You can’t be an Olympic athlete by practicing once a week. You have to take Jesus Christ into your life every day.” [27:39] “Guys! Our Father is REAL.” [28:25] “The people need to see God in you. … They see you; they want that.” [29:11] “Every day, the Word of God.” [29:25]

About asphyxiation:

According to the highly respected forensic physician, Frederick T. Zugibe, of The Crucifixion of Jesus: A Forensic Inquiry, crucifixion does not kill by asphyxiation. I highly recommend the book, which does a masterful job of explaining the physiology of Jesus’ suffering and death in terms this liberal arts major could understand.

I especially gained an appreciation for the Agony in the Garden, something I’d never thought about much. Zugibe explains the rare phenomenon of sweating blood and what causes it.

He goes into a lot of detail about where the asphyxiation myth originated, why it is so commonly believed, and the great lengths he went to investigate and eventually debunk it.

He also explains his research into how Jesus’ hands and feet were most likely nailed without breaking any bones. I was fascinated by his finding, supported by a real life murder case he worked on in which the victim had put her hand up and been stabbed through the hand without breaking a single bone.

Loathsome little replicas

Flowers reflected in droplets

Excerpt from a letter by Screwtape (a senior demon in the Lowerarchy) to Wormwood (a junior demon on his first mission on Earth):

To us a human is primarily Food; our aim is the absorption of its will into ours, the increase of our own area of selfhood at its expense. But the obedience which the Enemy demands of men is quite a different thing.

One must face the fact that all the talk about His love for men, and His service being perfect freedom, is not (as one would gladly believe) mere propaganda, but an appalling truth.

He really does want to fill the universe with a lot of loathsome little replicas of Himself—creatures, whose life, on its miniature scale, will be qualitatively like His own, not because He has absorbed them but because their wills freely conform to His.

We want cattle who can finally become food; He wants servants who can finally become sons. We want to suck in, He wants to give out. We are empty and would be filled; He is full and flows over.

Our war aim is a world in which Our Father Below has drawn all other beings into himself: the Enemy wants a world full of beings united to Him but still distinct.

The risen Christ is the reason for our witness

The Christian Gospel

I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. —1 Corinthians 2:2

Former major league baseball player Tony Graffanino tells of an ongoing ministry effort in a European country. Each year his organization holds a week-long baseball camp. During this week they also offer a daily Bible study. In past years, the leader tried to find reasoned ways to convince the campers that God exists so they would place their faith in Him. After about 13 years, they had seen only 3 people decide to follow Jesus.

Then they changed their approach, says Graffanino. Instead of “trying to present facts, or winning arguments for a debate,” they simply talked about “the amazing life and teachings of Jesus.” As a result, more campers came to listen, and more chose to follow Him.

The apostle Paul said that when we tell others about the gospel of Jesus Christ, we should set “forth the truth plainly. . . . We do not preach ourselves,” he said, “but Jesus Christ as Lord” (2 Cor. 4:2,5 niv). This was Paul’s standard for evangelism: “I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Cor. 2:2).

We should be knowledgeable about the Bible and about the reasons for our belief, and sometimes we need to explain those reasons. But the most compelling and effective story we can tell puts Christ in the center.

Father God, please use me in the lives of others.
Remind me to talk about who Jesus is and His life
and teachings. And not to be dragged into debates,
but to share Jesus’ amazing life.
