Oct 12 Prayer for Our Nation

I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;
I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.
May my meditation be sweet to Him;
I will be glad in the Lord.
Psalm 104:33-34

O Lord, We lift our voices and praise Your holy name! May You forever be the center of our thoughts, that in all things we may lift You up in worship and song. Let the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be a sweet aroma to You, for you are our King — our joy comes from You! Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; therefore we praise Your holy name forever.

Oct 11 Pray for Our Nation

Especially for the success of tonight’s debate between Vice President Biden and Vice Presidential Candidate Ryan. To help focus your prayers for the debate, I created this graphic of the people and the place.

For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man … to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. -Ephesians 3:14-16, 19

Lord, We bow before You in humble thanksgiving for Your gifts of power and strength, fortitude and might!  We claim the riches of Your Glory and the fullness of Your grace that comes through the indwelling of Your Spirit within us. We pray for our nation to remain firm and steadfast in the knowledge of Your truth and the promise of the victory that is ours through Christ, who loves us. Amen.

Oct 10 Prayer for Our Nation

And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ. ~Philippians 1:9-10

Father,

May your love flow through and around us. Speak to our hearts and open our minds that we may see You and the light of Your glory. Cleanse us, O Lord, that we may stand before You without blemish. Help us as a nation to be a discerning people with moral voices who will bring honor and glory to You, O God.

Oct 9: Prayer for Our Nation

We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all the saints. Colossians 1:3-4

Father,

We humbly come before You and ask that Your Spirit reach across the lands to all who are hurting and spiritually lost. Restore their hearts with hope everlasting; comfort them with Your tender, loving arms. May we be sensitive to their needs, whether physical or spiritual, and be eager and willing to share Your love for them, just as You have bestowed Your love upon us.

Oct 8, 2012 Prayer for Our Nation

Evening and morning and at noon
I will pray, and cry aloud,
And He shall hear my voice.
Psalm 55:17

Father, we exalt our praise and adoration to You all throughout the day and night! May we never forget that You are merciful and gracious and that You, our Creator, receive our devotion and prayers with an attentive, listening ear. Give us eyes to see the splendor of Your holiness and ears to hear the majesty of Your voice as You lead us to holy and righteous living.

October 7th Prayer for Our Nation

29 days until Election Day

The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
My God, my strength, in whom I will trust;
My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised;
So shall I be saved from my enemies.
Psalm 18:2-3

Lord,

You are the rock and strength of this nation. You are the only one who can deliver us from our enemies. We trust in You and pray humbly for Your guidance and direction for this great nation. Give us wisdom to make right choices. Help us to live in such a way that Your name will be honored in all things. May You be forever praised.

Prayer for Our Nation: October 6, 2012

30 Days until Election Day

Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. -Romans 8:26

Thank You, Lord for the gift of Your spirit who continually helps us overcome our weaknesses. We confess that all things are possible through You and nothing is possible without You! Open our hearts and intercede with the Father that we may humble ourselves in Your presence. We thank You for Your forgiveness. Strengthen us to live with purpose and empower us to serve You.

Oct 4 Prayer for the Nation

The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord,

But the prayer of the upright is His delight.

Proverbs 15:8

Father,

Your Word says that if we delight ourselves in You, You will give us the desires of our hearts (Psalm 37:4). Please direct our paths in Your ways everlasting so that Your will becomes our desire; so that Your way becomes our delight.

Fill us with the power of Your presence and bind us together as a people of one nation under God. And through each day, to You be the glory for all goodness and blessing that come our way.

Oct 3 Prayer for our nation

[From the 40-day prayer guide for our nation. I ordered this in plenty of time, but did not get it in time to start on Day 1. I’m hoping that is because the printer go far many orders than anticipated and there is now a STORM of prayer going up from every corner of God’s Kingdom.]

Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. James 5:16

Father,

Give us Your guidance and strength as we honestly confess our sins to You and to one another. And give us compassionate hearts as we pray for each other and our leaders across the country and the world. Rid us of judgment, condemnation, and pride, and fill us with a spirit of grace, mercy and love. Create in our hearts a fervent desire to pray every day for Your leadership to reign in our lives.

[Please forgive any typos. I have a raging case of conjunctivitis in both eyes and can barely see.]

Kicking demon butt

I started the following as a short note to Pete on the Grudge, in regard to his skunk and spilled coffee. It got long. It also got feeling important enough for a blog posting, rather than burial in comments that a lot of our visitors don’t read.

We’re doing spiritual warfare here and we’re doing damage to Satan’s strongholds. Obviously, there will be push back. Skunk in the road. Spilled coffee in the lap (ouch). These are expectable events in anyone’s ordinary life, much more so when you go poking the hornet’s nest the way we’re doing now.

I’ve been doing spiritual warfare for years (long story) and I’ve learned two things.

  1. We can choose how we respond to bad things.
  2. If we choose grace over grouch, it totally kicks demon butt.

It’s challenging to learn how to thank God for bad stuff and, for a long time, I thought it was sick to even try. Then, I learned that it is only sick if you thank Him for the bad thing itself, not for the good He can bring out of it.

Romans 8:28 says,

“In all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

It doesn’t say, “In the good things.” It says, “In ALL things.”

So He’s doing good, always and everywhere. The trick for us is to learn to work WITH Him in this. I’m reminded of my eldest, who was a slippery escape artist as a toddler. Hold her hand, she’d do her best to pull away. Put a leash on her, she’d sit on the sidewalk and scream. Let her choose her own direction, she’d wait to see which way I wanted to go, so she could run the other way.

Does anyone question that I always wanted what was best for her and that, if she’d cooperated by going WITH me, we could have had more fun and fewer arguments and tears? God’s the same way. When something bad happens, the way of the flesh is to cuss and be all cranky about it; the way of grace is to choose the opposite.

It’s the message of the cross, that in and with Jesus, we can flip any and all bad things on their heads and use them to glorify God and build His kingdom.

Basic steps: ACTS

Adoration: Rejoice in having authority in Jesus to rebuke Satan and his plan to harm you physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

Contrition: Repent of the human desire to bitch and moan and, through repentance, allow God’s grace to change those human feelings.

Thanksgiving: Thank God for having a wonderful plan to bring good out of whatever it is.

Supplication: Offer up the suffering the bad things causes for the salvation of sinners.

I learned the power in this in a really wonderful way once.

I was in the kitchen and dropped something full of something, forget what, but it broke and made an almighty mess all over the floor and up the cupboard doors. My weak heart and arthritis make this a bigger problem for me than for most.

So I’m standing there, looking at this mess, knowing the clean-up will be long and painful. But I remembered I had the choice how to respond. So I said, out loud,

“Thank you, Lord, for giving me this chance to kick demon butt.”

I am not nuts and I am NOT making this up. But as soon as I finished saying that, I HEARD a voice say disgustedly,

“I HATE when she does that!”

It still gives me the grins to remember that!

This is not an easy skill to learn. But it is SO worth it. It also seems to me, looking back, that it was the first step on my road to beating depression.
