In case you weren’t aware, it’s 2015 and New York City is not under water.
Anthropogenic Global Warmists (also known as Climate Change Alarmists) maintain with a religious fervor that man’s use of fossil fuels is going to ruin Earth’s environment BY MELTING ALL THE ICE!
Please note that man’s use of fossil fuels was inconsequential before 1950.
The Earth has three huge expanses of ice: the Arctic Ice Cap and the two huge Ice Sheets in Antarctica and Greenland.
The Arctic Ice Cap is all Sea Ice – i.e., it’s floating like a ginormous ice cube. And as we know from our experience with iced beverages and as Archimedes explained in his Buoyancy Principle, when floating ice melts, the water level doesn’t rise. So … never mind the Arctic Ice Cap.
The two Ice Sheets are on land. When this ice melts, the water goes into the oceans and causes the global mean sea level to rise. For the past several hundred years, the oceans have been rising at the snail’s pace of 7″ per century. I think we’ll have time to buy some waders and jack the house up, don’t you?
It would take an absurd change in global temperatures to cause the kind of melt that the Algoreacle and his Alcolytes yammer about.
The Antarctic Ice Sheet is not going to suddenly go gushing into the oceans for the simple reason that the average daily temperature in Antarctica is -58°F. Ice does not begin to melt until the temperature rises above +32°F. Even the most alarmist of global warmists has never been stupid enough to claim that carbon dioxide was going to cause 100°F of global warming!!
The Greenland Ice Sheet contains 684,000 cubic miles of ice. It would ALL have to melt to increase global sea levels by the 20+ feet alarmists set their hair on fire about. This is beyond unlikely because Greenland has had a significant amount of ice on it for the last 18 million years, the current ice is 110,000 years old, and the average annual temperature would have to increase by 50°F or more before there would be any significant melting. In other words, we’re not going to see drowning airports any time soon.
This is all not to say that global warming has never caused the seas to rise. It happened BIG TIME at the end of the last glacial period … FIFTEEN THOUSAND YEARS AGO!
