AMERICAN HISTORY: On March 2, 1807, the Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves was signed by President Thomas Jefferson. The Act would make it illegal to import slaves into the United States starting January 1, 1808. This law aimed to end the international slave trade, although it did not abolish slavery itself or the domestic slave trade within the country.

CHURCH INVASION: A federal grand jury in Minnesota indicted nine individuals on felony charges, including conspiracy against rights of religious freedom at a place of worship and injuring, intimidating, or interfering with the exercise of religious freedom (via force, threat, or obstruction). All nine have pleaded not guilty and the cases are proceeding to trial. [8:25] – Jonathan Parnell, the pastor of the church that Don Lemon et al. invaded on January 18, has spoken about his experience. He said he had been attempting to read aloud from the Bible when “several individuals scattered throughout the sanctuary rose together and, like a flash mob, converged with chants and clenched fists.” When the mob shouted, “Hands up! Don’t shoot!” that led worshipers to flee, “fearing it was an active shooter situation.”

“In that instant, I interpreted what was going on: this was about provocation, intimidation, and spectacle. They were here to incite violence. The spiritual dimension of it all came into focus. A malevolent darkness was behind this—the same darkness behind the murder of pre-born children, and the mutilation of children’s bodies, and the manipulation of children’s minds. Those were all evils our children had escaped, so now the weapon was terror.

“The agitators screamed in our faces and said we weren’t a real church. They harassed individuals for their ethnicity and ‘uttered all kinds of evil’ against us falsely. They spewed lies upon lies, and our refusal to retaliate seemed only to frustrate them.”

HOW JESUS DID IT: [16:28] – I wish I’d heard this 50 years ago. I grew up with bullies and vowed to never be one, because I knew first hand how much it hurt. But I believed my only other option was to suck it up and be a silent, smiling doormat. In therapy, I finally learned about boundaries, but it was not in a biblical context. However, what my therapist taught me amounted to what Kris says here – refusing retaliation while confronting rather than submitting to the abuse. One of the beauties of doing this has been that it quickly exposed which people were worth keeping in my life. The bullies and narcissists responded to boundary setting by icing me out. The genuinely lovely people responded with dialogue and relational growth.

VOTER ID: Actually, it is not Schumer’s IQ that is the problem. It’s his lying tongue. Jim Crow (literacy) laws were passed by Democrats to keep newly freed, mostly illiterate slaves from voting, not because they were black, but because they overwhelming supported “the party of Lincoln” – i.e., the Republican Party. If illegals and other cheaters were voting Republican, Democrats would be demanding voter id.

GRAMMY NOTES: [3:06] – The idea of God holding my right hand felt constricting to me, because I imagined it like a child whose parent is holding the hand to control, e.g., while crossing the street. In that position, one can not use the dominant hand. But while I was listening to this video, I suddenly saw in my mind’s eye how Mama Buzz uses “hand-over-hand” with Buzz to help him learn a new skill. She doesn’t grip his hand, palm-to-palm, but rather places her palm lightly on the back of his hand; her hand is holding his, but it is not to constrain his actions, but rather to gently guide them.

GRAMMY NOTES: I am reposting the meditation about alignment that I posted yesterday, because it really hit me where I live. I have been thinking and praying about it a lot. I have wasted far too many of the hours God has given me brooding over the past and fearing for the future.

There are times and reasons to think about the past or to plan for the future, but as C.S. Lewis has pointed out, those times and reasons are only aligned with God’s will when they are the legitimate business of the present. Our lives only intersect with eternity in the now. The past is fixed; the futures we imagine may or may not happen. Our holy task is to focus on being aligned with God’s will in each present moment.

When I imagine each of us being one of those little iron filings, I have to laugh at how futile it is to think we can see God’s pattern and meaning for our lives from our perspective. Minnesota Update

Protesters disrupted services at Cities Church in St. Paul where a local official with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement serves as a pastor.

U.S. Department of Justice Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon said her agency is investigating the incident for possible federal civil rights violations.

Surprisingly (to me), the most relevant federal statute may be The Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act (FACE). While it has primarily been used to prosecute peaceful anti-abortion protesters, it actually prohibits the use of force, threats, or physical obstruction to interfere with individuals seeking reproductive health services or exercising their religious rights at places of worship.

Cities Church could potentially also take this to a local court and sue for criminal trespass. Churches (including their buildings, grounds, parking lots, and related facilities) are typically considered private property, even when they are open to the public for services, events, or general visitation. This means the church leadership (or authorized representatives, like pastors, elders, or property managers) can control access, decide who is welcome, and revoke permission for anyone to be there.

These protesters engaged in criminal trespass by knowingly and intentionally entering to disrupt and then refusing to leave when asked. Penalties vary by state and severity and can include fines, jail time, probation, or community service. Our constitutional rights to gather and express ourselves are only guaranteed on government property. Private property owners get to choose when and how they happen.

Translation: “The human being in gestation or nasciturus is a natural person, including the conceived at any stage of gestation within the maternal uterus.“

This establishes civil personhood from conception, allowing the unborn to potentially benefit from rights like inheritance, donations, or other protections afford born human beings.

Nineteenth Day of Advent

DAILY PRAYER: Dear Lord, Help us each to focus on the significance of Christ’s birth and the hope He brings to the world. In Jesus’ Name, we pray. Amen.

CALIFORNICATION: [14:09] – Major companies are moving elsewhere. The Nevada Globe called it “a brutal indictment of California’s hostile business climate.”

FILM HISTORY: [24:18] – Philip Van Doren Stern said he got the idea for the story in a dream. I can’t help thinking it was God’s gift to future America, because hardly anybody in the 1940s wanted it.

HOLIDAY SHOPPING: Also, pill organizers and adult coloring books.

HYPOCRISY: For the record, I am not posting this to excuse Trump’s bad attitude. I think we should be better than this! MAR-A-LAGO RAID: Newly declassified emails may give Trump grounds to sue for civil liberty violations or prompt prosecutors to pursue a criminal investigation. They show that, before the 2022 raid on Trump’s home in Florida, the FBI expressed doubt that Trump had done anything wrong. FBI agents repeatedly recommended talking to Trump’s lawyers rather than raiding or, failing that, limiting the warrant to avoid private areas of the estate.

The Biden DOJ blew them off. On June 1, 2022, the Assistant Special Agent in Charge wrote, “DOJ has been adamant that no accommodation would be given and that they would not reach out to the attorney.” Nevertheless, the FBI continued to push for “a reasonable conversation with the former president’s attorney.”

When it became obvious the raid would happen regardless, the FBI advocated for a “professional, low key” search that respected “the optics.” As we all know, the August 8, 2022 raid, which was authorized by then-Attorney General Merrick Garland, was anything but.

VOTER FRAUD: The DOJ’s Civil Rights Division is suing 18 states for refusing to provide complete state voting registration lists. The Trump administration says it wants the information to verify the states are following federal election law in an effort to strengthen voting security. The 18 states, all of which Trump lost in 2020, call it intimidation in an effort to influence elections.
