Hey everyone… Check out this list and see where your state falls in the “happiness” ratings. Mine (Wisconsin) falls pretty near the middle. But I see that Frankly’s state (Montana) ranks considerably higher than mine, which frankly has me a little annoyed. Illinois, where I grew up, ranks lower than Wisconsin on the happiness scale, which tells me I made the right choice to move here. What do you all think about your state’s rating?

I don’t think they polled the former Californians, at least not in the dead of winter. My husband says it was 70 degrees today. I’m beginning to suspect his reasons for delaying his return trip to MT by 5 days…

MO is 34th. Yeah, I believe that. Cold winters, hot summers, and our big cities are not well managed.

Virginia 22nd ! Surprised to see Alaska so high (brrrrrr) and Florida so low?

That surprised me too, Denise. Pure speculation here, but maybe it has to do with the relative health of the people in each state. Based purely on anecdotal evidence, it seems that a lot of people move south for their health, because they can’t take the cold; by contrast, no one ever moves to the frozen north for their health! Maybe if you can survive the long cold dark winters up north, that means you are made of sterner stuff to begin with? As I said, pure speculation. (I speak as a lifelong Midwesterner who loves winter, loves snow, and is therefore something of an anomaly to begin with.)

You might have the explanation, Bob. My hat is off to all of you who brave those bad winters. The Virginia winter is almost more than I can stand, and it is probably more like your spring. I have a tropical disposition, but not in the way that T. R. Pearson uses it (a “loose” woman). 🙂

It may seem odd to you, Ting, but some of us actually like winter. I can’t like the politics where I live, but I do enjoy the climate very much.
