Sorry for all the small print, but I doubt many folks outside NY-23 knew, much less remember the details of this long gone campaign.

John Lithgow reciting Newt’s press release….we found this amusing this morning.

Newt is the poster boy for what happens when someone stays in Washington too long. I remember the first time I ever heard him speak, about 25 or 30 years ago when he was a young and relatively obscure congressman from Georgia. I had never heard of him before, and I doubt very many other people had either, but he was invited to speak at a National Press Club luncheon, which was broadcast on public radio. When I heard him speak, I was swept right off my feet. This guy believed in everything I believed in — limited government, low taxes, personal responsibility, individual rights — he was terrific! Since that long-ago day, I have seen how many guys start out that way — full of youthful idealism, their heads screwed on straight, determined not to be corrupted or compromised by the lure of power — but after they’ve been in office a while, their brains eventually go soft and they end up selling out, losing their compass, whatever depressing metaphor you want to use. One more reason why we need term limits, I guess.

And speaking of stupid people … Kloppenburg forced the taxpayers to spent a bazillion dollars on a pointless recount. She still LOST by more than seven THOUSAND votes. Sheesh.
