Democrats were in charge for the A-bomb

Click graphics to embiggen for easier reading.

You know how the Left harps on how Eeeeevil and Imperialist the U.S. is and cites “We’re the only country to actually USE nukes” as proof?

Well … FDR (the Dems favorite uncanonized saint) started the Manhattan Project under the 76th Congress, steered it toward weapons research under the 77th Congress, and merged it with the British and Canadian nuclear weapons programs under the 78th Congress. Throughout these six years, this Democratic president had Democrat majorities in both houses of Congress.

When his Democratic successor, President Truman, dropped A-bombs on Japan, he also had Democrat majorities in both houses of Congress.

So why is it exactly that Democrats act so morally superior on this issue, as if it’s REPUBLICANS whose hands are soiled by the dirty fall-out of our WMD program?

  1. Interesting. I had always thought that Truman’s primary reason for deciding to use the bombs was to render an invasion of Japan by U.S. forces unnecessary, and thus spare the lives of American servicemen, thousands of whom would surely have died in such an invasion. Of course no one other than God has any way of knowing whether more lives, or fewer, would have been lost if the bombs had not been used and the U.S. had gone ahead with the planned invasion. History is full of “what if” moments. People in positions of power have to make the best judgments they can with the information they have available at the moment, and then they have to live with the consequences. One of the many reasons why I have never lusted after power!

I learned the same thing, but the site I consulted listed this other stuff and I’m not qualified to know one way or t’other.

My real reason for doing these two graphics was to allow us to trigger thoughtful Democrats into citing the very valid points you made … and then we ask oh so sweetly, “I totally agree. So explain to me why you never consider these things when condemning Bush and Cheney to the lowest pits of hell?”

The idiot Democrats will probably tear the graphic up and/or start yelling at or trying to choke you. As voters, they’re a lost cause anyway, but a second use for these graphics could be to identify which of your targets is which so you can focus your valuable time educating the thoughtful ones.

I understand Leftists have put down America for dropping The Bomb(s) and ending the war, and of course conservatives can be thought of as representing America in all its Glory, while Leftists can be thought of as opposing that spirit, still, I wasn’t really aware that Democrats blamed Republicans for Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Was there something in particular to which you were responding here?

Wherever did you get that “to satisfy America’s thirst for vengeance against the Japanese” and the rest of those “reasons” for dropping the bombs? One might almost imagine from the tone of this that you somehow object to our having dropped the bomb, although I presume you’re merely being sardonic. No question there was a desire for vengeance among many where the “punishment” of Hiroshima and Nagasaki fit the “crimes” that began (for the USA) with Pearl Harbor, but the satisfaction of vendetta was primarily a consequence, hardly significant as motivation. Certainly, there was already an interesting in showing the Commies our superiority. “Justifying the effort and expense” is just plain stupid. Ending the war without invading Japan was the crucial matter. The toll upon both sides had we failed to act, or delayed, would have absolutely dwarfed the damage to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. For that matter, the carpet-bombing of Tokyo was more devastating than The Bomb.

For the real human toll likely in the event of delay or choice to not drop the bomb, I recommend “Thank God For The Atom Bomb” [ArthurK] over at Ace of Spades, and the [PDF] article to which it refers. Also recommended is the History Channel show on Japan’s atomic bomb, rumored to have actually reached the stage where they test-fired one in Korea.

My Uncle Ed, after slogging through the mud of Europe, was one of those positioned to die invading the Japan islands, but who instead is alive to celebrate his 90th birthday next week. Thank God for the Atom Bomb!
