It took some digging,but I have an all-positive news post to start your long holiday weekend.
But first a few words.I share a bench to fold my papers with a black guy who works full time at Fed Ex and does this part-time.We usually talk sports,but I started to mess with him today about all the scandals and the mess Obama is making.He STILL insisted everything was about the mess Bush left.We’re friends and agreed that I wasn’t going to change his mind and he wouldn’t change mine.But it became clear how blindly loyal blacks are to someone they think is one of “them.”

Going to my daughter’s for a cookout this Sunday.Ever since I was hospitalized and she came up to see me and we talked for hours,I feel like I’m a new dad all over again.I have the old wooden pole lamp from Granny’s house that I read by all through my youth and the ornate mirror with a watermill painting on the top that hung at the bottom of the stairway that I saw when I came down every morning.They’re all I have left.I plan to give them to my daughter.We have no room for them and I wanted to keep them in my family.When her daughter and son are grown she can give them to them if she chooses.Both pieces are at or over 100 years,but to me they are a priceless piece of who I am and the man I became.And so is my child.

Who was the one who said not to eat anything that your grandparents would not have recognized as food? It should probably be updated to great-grandparents, since most people of my generation were raised on industrial food. My mother, God rest her soul, fed us industrial food (edible substances totally void of nutrition) all the time, thinking it was good for us. She wasn’t stupid, but she was susceptible to slick marketing campaigns, and she was schnookered by the industrial food giants’ lavishly-financed propaganda that aimed to persuade women — specifically mothers of young children — that modern, scientifically-formulated, factory-produced food was actually more healthful and nutritious than the old-fashioned inferior food that our pre-industrial ancestors ate. If you ever listen to the old-time radio programs that some stations occasionally broadcast, you’ll hear commercials from the fifties and sixties designed to persuade young mothers to feed their kids manufactured food, as opposed to food grown in a garden or raised on a farm. And most women of my mother’s generation fell for it.

Oh yeah. Remember those TV dinners that tasted like the metal trays they came in? WE wanted them so badly because of great marketing.
And our parents were all smokers, because the stars of their era looked cool with their “Kools”. Our generation was preached “smoking stinks” and we did not smoke so much.
That is why we need to market healthful eating to kids, not cram it down their throats the way MOOCH wants to do with legislation. A kid will choose the junk food every time, unless they are taught WHY they should choose the healthier option. No matter what Mooch says, as long as her husband is out there eating hot dogs(and dogs), the kids are going to want to eat those hot dogs just like the first black president.

Our TV died shortly before our first baby was born, and for some reason we never got around to repairing or replacing it, so our kids grew up without television, which meant they never saw commercials. That made it a LOT easier to raise them on real food and not have them clamoring for junk food all the time. As adults they all eat healthfully… well, most of the time… because it’s what they’re used to. They didn’t have to go through a major re-education effort, as I did when I was in my late teens/early twenties and started finding out what the nutrient-free stuff I’d been consuming all my life was doing to me.
By the way, I love hot dogs, as long as they’re all natural and made from 100% grass-fed beef. I buy them straight from the farmer who raised the beef. More expensive than grocery store hot dogs, but worth it.

As I recall, Indiana kept the snakes at bay with FIRE. Pete riding into DC with a flaming torch held high in his right hand and a copy of the Constitution tucked into his left, bullwhip hanging off one hip, pistol off the other. We’ll have to get busy sewing him up a nice copper-patina-green warrior suit and a backpack sling for his O2 tanks. 🙂
