That spelling test got me pretty good. 😀

I loved spelling in elementary school — it was my best subject, because I could excel without having to work hard. I used to win school spelling bees against everyone in my class, as well as everyone in the next grade up. Unfortunately, it gave me kind of a big head, and gave me the mistaken impression that I was really smart. I was completely unprepared the first time I had to deal with subjects that were difficult and required hard work.

IKWYM. I have a good visual memory. I’d look at the word list on Monday and the shape of the words stuck with me, so I got 100% on Friday. My second grade teacher had a big chart with spelling test results; the perfect scores were above a line at the top. I was always there. Then one day she said we couldn’t use erasers on the test. It was the first time I ever wasn’t above the line. It was shocking to find out I wasn’t Little Miss Perfection. I’m glad I got a wake up call early. My sil and an old gf both said they sailed through without working hard until GRADUATE school. Man, that’s a tough time to have to finally develop some study habits! The gf had done her Bachelor’s in 3 years. She failed first year Master’s, so that took her 3 years too.

Well, I never made it as far as graduate school. Once I had my B.A., that was it — I never wanted to see the inside of a classroom again as long as I lived!
The first time I found out what it was like to have to work hard at something was in high school algebra. Math had never been my favorite subject in elementary school, but I’d always been good at it and I certainly never found it difficult. Then algebra came along, and shattered my image of myself as a smart person. Before that, I’d scorned people who had trouble in school, so being taken down a few pegs was good for me — for the first time I knew what it was to struggle academically. It’s a little mind-boggling to realize that for some people, EVERY subject is as challenging as algebra was for me.

I loved algebra, but got slammed when I hit geometry. I was so lost all year, then about 2 weeks before the Regents exam, I had this amazing EUREKA moment where I suddenly GOT IT and I had a ball at the exam.

ROFFL Nintendo! I got a text from Mama Buzz in December: “Jesus and I put up lights today.” Then I got an email. “Jess and I put up lights. Jesus was probably watching, but He didn’t help. Stupid autocorrect.”
